It’s a hot, hot August but remember that September will be here before you know it with crisp, cooler days, less traffic and more time to enjoy our special place. I remember when I taught, I’d go to the high school in August, unpack new books, set up a bulletin board, plan new and hopefully, exciting lessons just to be ready for the new school year. I was excited to begin anew! I feel this way about our fall semester.
This September is special because many of us will return to the campus and in-person learning! We get to start anew! It will be so good to see our ALL friends in person and share animated discussions in the classrooms. Coming up the stairs and entering the lobby, hearing members laughing and chatting is something I have missed. Zoom classes will also continue - a choice that works for many of our members.
Before you return, check out the video that Miriam Kronish, Jean DeVincentis, and I made about ALL. You can find the link on the media productions page of our website www.capecodall.org/media-productions. Also, Communications Committee member Joan Freedman has been doing a podcast and has interviewed some of our coordinators. These are worth a listen and are also at www.capecodall.org/media-productions.
So, enjoy the rest of the summer. Check your email often for updated information about ALL. Soon we will meet again.
Dianne Tattersall
ALL President

We are looking for Desk Volunteers to staff the office desk during the school day. Volunteers’ duties include answering the phone, responding to questions, and making ALL feel welcoming.
Desk Volunteer time slots are Monday through Friday 8:30 – 10:30, 10:30 – 12:30 and 12:30 – 3:00. This is a great way for new members to meet other members and to get a better sense of our complete program.
We currently need a volunteer for the 10:30-12:30 slot on Mondays. In addition, we need volunteers to be on the backup list.

___________________________________________
ALL will soon be opening its doors again. We have over 70 courses, some on Zoom and some in-person. In order to capture a broader student and instructor base the decision was made to incorporate podcasting and video-casting into our toolbox for getting our message out. To that effort ALL became a member of Cape Cod Media Center (CCM), a public nonprofit media center station serving the mid-Cape. Thus began my journey into the world of casting!
As we began our instruction at CCM I quickly realized that the other members of our group were vastly more knowledgeable in technology than I was. Immediately, I felt like the dumbest kid in the class, a fact I tried to hide. They were able to understand terms, hardware, software, communicate with the instructor and ask questions of merit. All the while, I sat there feeling entirely off balance, like in a video game, a whole different world.
Over the course of the winter, we gradually had to launch into our own projects. Mine was Podcasting. I loved the podcast studio. It is small and dark, and has beautiful sound. You can close the door and the rest of the world falls away. I put on the headphones and felt very professional. Heck, I looked professional, Minnie Mouse ears on and all. My focus was on the fabulous instructors at ALL. Three of them joined me in conversations about themselves and their experiences at ALL and the courses they had taught.
Then came the editing. I honestly felt like I was in techno-hell! Nothing worked right, sounded right, got saved right. I felt like a failure. How come I could not do this? What was wrong with me? Other people could do it. I fell into classic student behavior. I didn’t ask questions. My self-esteem took a massive hit. I felt like one of my students who didn’t understand English and was asked to perform with inadequate skills. I could feel the look on my face and knew I looked just like hundreds of students I had dealt with; befuddled, skeptical, and angry.
The teacher had become the student.
The whole experience gave me a new appreciation of individualized learning and what it feels like to learn. We all come from different backgrounds, different experiences, different strengths and weaknesses. As teachers, we need to slow instruction down, give students time to ask more questions and reach out to that silent student who may not want to appear dumb. We need to give special help to that student who learns differently.
I want to thank the staff at Cape Cod Media Center, especially Jamison Horton, Dave Dewees, and Christian Garnett for their individualized help (https://capemedia.org). My overwhelming gratitude to Christine Johnston, Joe Gonzalez and Mary Joyce of ALL for their time and graciousness of spirit to go on-air with me, Holly Anderson of ALL for being part of the group and adding her extensive skills, and to Marianne Triplette and Jean DeVincentis of ALL for editing and launching the podcasts which can be found on our website at www.capecodall.org/media-productions.
