Fall 2022 Registration Guidelines for Continuing and New Students

Enrollment Requirements

On May 31, 2022, The Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) reissued its guidance for the 2022-23 academic year and has clarified the following:

  • International Students admitted and enrolled after March 9, 2020 (beginning the summer 2020 semester), can only enroll in ONE online class toward their full course of study during the spring and fall semester. If a student needs only one course to complete the program of study, the course cannot be online. For clarification purposes, hybrid courses count as face-to-face courses.
  • International students who were actively enrolled at a U.S. school prior to March 9, 2020, and have continuously complied with the terms of their nonimmigrant status can temporarily engage in courses that are all online or a combination of online and hybrid/face-to-face to complete their full course of study during the 2022-23 academic year.

For questions about Enrollment Requirements, please visit our Enrollment Requirements Webpage, or email: [email protected]

Reducing Your Course Load (RCL)

As an international student, you must request approval from your immigration advisor before dropping any classes or enrolling less than full-time. Visit our Enrollment Requirement Webpage for more information.

Has Your U.S. Physical Address Changed?

If you move within the U.S., you are required to update your mailing and billing address within 10 days of the change through CougarNet. Scam Alert

F-1 students and J-1 degree-seeking students are permitted to work on campus (payment is from the university) up to the last day of their final enrolled term. Unsolicited email job offers, internships, and business opportunities are always a scam and will promise $300 - $500 a week. Often clicking through these offers and giving up your password will allow the scammer to use your email to send the scam to others at SIUE.

Here are ways to protect yourself, your friends, your family, and SIUE:

  1. Forward any suspicious job offer emails to [email protected]
  2. Never share your personal information such as Social Security Number (SSN), address and Date of Birth (DoB) with anyone on the phone or through email.
  3. Contact ITS if you believe your personal information has been compromised

Additional information to protect yourself from scammers can be found here.

Always remember the U.S. government entities will not call you to ask for any form of payment of any kind

Get Involved!

Cultural Adjustment Tips

As an international student, you may feel homesick, encounter difficulties adjusting to your new environment, language, or communication barrier, etc. It is important to be aware of these challenges and realize that your feelings are normal. Talk to other students who have gone through this transition. The SIUE Counseling Services is dedicated to supporting SIUE students in reaching their goals. Visit the Counseling and Health Service Office or call 618-650-2842 to set up a free appointment with a counseling specialist. The office is located in the Student Success Center, Room 0220 and they are open from Monday through Friday between 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. Download the Counseling brochure here.

Another way to overcome cultural adjustment challenges is to get involved in activities on campus. You can also join TANDEM - A language exchange program facilitated by the Foreign Languages Training Center (FLTC) which pairs international students with other SIUE students who are studying a foreign language. Follow TANDEM on Facebook or email Susan McDonald at [email protected] for more information about upcoming events.

GAP – the Global Ambassador Program is another great student organization to join. This buddy program pairs U.S. students with international students and offers a variety of opportunities for participants to interact throughout the semester, both on- and off-campus. You can learn more about GAP on their Get Involved page. Visit our website for more cultural adjustment tips and a list of International Student Associations at SIUE.

Campus Recreational Center

Do you want to participate in on-campus intramural sports? The Campus Recreational Center has a variety of sports activities for every student at SIUE! Come join other students and explore the various recreational event at the Fitness Center. "All work and no play ...". Email Contact Natalie Hawkins at [email protected] for information.

Learning Support Services - Undergraduate Students

Learning Support Services (LSS) is an instructional support unit for all students at SIUE. Learning Support Services is home to the Tutoring Resource Center, Writing Center, and Supplemental Instruction. The center is dedicated to helping SIUE students prepare and excel in the classroom. You can make an appointment with the Learning Support service by calling (618) 650‑3717 or emailing [email protected] if you are having academic challenges.

Contact your Program Director (PD), Academic Department, or your instructors if you are a graduate student experiencing academic challenges.

Intensive English Pathway Program

The Intensive English Pathway (IEP) is an engaging pathway program designed for international students who do not yet meet English language proficiency requirements. Depending on their English placement, students have the benefit of studying in either an all-English Intensive English Program or in select Intensive English Pathway classes while taking credit-bearing degree courses. Visit the IEP website to see their tutoring schedule for Fall 2022.
