Thank you to our recent Partners!
Happiness Happens Month
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any set of circumstances, to choose one’s way.”
-Viktor Frankl
As we all continue to do our valuable work in establishing partnerships for our various nonprofit organizations, let’s remember to be happy about what we are doing. As members of the philanthropic community, remind yourselves that the opportunity you are providing to your donors and volunteers brings them happiness and joy. What better gift can you provide them?
Thank you for all that you do to make this a better world.
Warmly,
Yulanda Davis-Quarrie

Dear fellow AFP-GLAC Members and Friends,
Are you back in the office? Still working from home? Or maybe you’ve gone hybrid for good?
Here I am on my deck - working from home.
Whatever your work situation, I encourage you to seek out the support and comradery of fellow fundraising professionals by participating in AFP-GLAC workshops and events. I get it, you’re busy. But carve out the time for yourself. No one else will!
How about taking the concepts of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access) beyond talk and to the next level? Join us for an online workshop with AFP Chicago and learn how to build an IDEA(L) organization on Sept 16 at 11:00 AM. Register today!
What are the ethical issues that non-profits face? And what happens when the right choices aren’t made? Join us and our special guests from the law firm LFNP – The Law Firm for Non-Profits, for what should be a really interesting conversation at our annual AFP-GLAC Ethics Breakfast on October 6 at the Cathedral Center at Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles. Registration will open soon. Meanwhile, explore the ethics resources on the AFP-GLAC website.
Finally, we are most excited and very hard at work planning for our back to in-person National Philanthropy Day Conference and Awards Celebration to be held in downtown Los Angeles on October 28, 2022 at the JW Marriott from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Registration is now open. This year, in addition to our thought-provoking educational sessions and inspirational luncheon, our exhibitor hall will feature a Career Corner to help job seekers and non-profits with development positions to fill. If you are hiring, sign up for a table and get a bonus – a one month free job posting on the AFP-GLAC Job Board. You can reach out to me directly to discuss sponsorship opportunities. yherrera@netzelgrigsby.com
I hope you are finding joy and happiness in your work and I look forward to seeing you soon!
Yvette Herrera

Thank you for joining us!
We’d like to extend a sincere thank you to all of our members who attended our in-person seminar this week: 5 Ways To Advance Your Fundraising Leadership This Year led by Dr. Patton McDowell, MBA, CFRE. It was a fantastic session that provided realistic and actionable ways to advance your leadership and empower your team to do the same. Here are some key takeaways for those who missed it:
- Have a clear understanding of what the next step in your career looks like and what an ideal timeline looks like for you
-
Reflect on your strengths and weaknesses and figure out what additional education or resources you need in order to address any knowledge or experience gaps (AFP offers some great educational courses! Click here to take advantage of resources offered to you)
- Create a list of steps you’re going to take to get you where you need to be (what the next month, 6 months and year look like)
-
Take action and know that you have a network of over 350 local colleagues and 30,000 additional colleagues globally that you can connect with through our community platform located here.
We hope to see more of you in person at National Philanthropy Day on October 28th!

It’s Our Turn to Help Our Parents
AFP Global provides benefits to our chapter much like our parents do (or did) for us. Global birthed us. They bring us together with the greater fundraising family. They educate us on everything from salary norms to Giving USA’s prior year report. They host an annual reunion (ICON) and even give us an allowance every spring. Without Global, we wouldn’t be here as a chapter or have all these automatic benefits.
Each year, you're invited to give back to Global through a gift to the Be Cause the Campaign. It’s like paying for your parent’s birthday party or their anniversary. The “gift” shows care and appreciation, and just like at the party (or after), you will get a piece of it back in some way. Global’s way is to take a percentage of what you give and return it to us the following spring. The more our chapter gives to AFP Global, the bigger the spring allowance.
AFP GLAC doesn't use the allowance to pay for candy and soda. It allows members-in-need to attend educational opportunities and maintain their membership. Sometimes, our members need just a little help.
| |
When you get a chance, please go to the link below and make a gift. Be sure to choose AFP CA Greater Los Angeles Chapter for your affiliation so that the chapter can receive credit. Thank you for taking the time to support our parents while supporting yourself and the chapter.

AFP-GLAC Scholarships for Professional Development and Membership
AFP-GLAC has scholarships to help our members succeed as fundraising professionals and to help prospective members join our network of accomplished members.
We have several scholarships available, all on a first-come, first-served basis. To help our members attend the many events we hold, scholarships can cover 100% of the cost of virtual events and 50% of the cost for in-person events. Scholarships are also available so members can attend the National Philanthropy Day conference and luncheon on October 28.
Finally, we have scholarships that help cover the cost of joining AFP-GLAC, including chapter-funded scholarships that cover the chapter dues and scholarships from AFP Global that will also cover the global dues. If you have a colleague or friend who wants to join AFP-GLAC, but the cost is too high, please share this limited opportunity with them!
As always, with our AFP-GLAC scholarships, there are no strings attached. We make them available to help support our talented fundraising community gain valuable professional development. To learn more about scholarships or apply for one, please visit our website or contact me.
