Association of Lutheran Church Musicians

August 1, 2022 e-newsletter
Greetings from President Nancy Raabe
August 1st is a day of transition for ALCM--and for two of its members. Today marks the last day of Kevin Barger's role as president of ALCM. He now assumes the role of past-president, a position he will hold for the next year until the new president-elect takes office. The other part of today's transition is that Nancy Raabe moves from her position as president-elect into the role of president, a position she will hold for the next three years. We are grateful for these faithful servants and their willingness to serve ALCM in these important leadership roles. Thank you, Kevin and Nancy, and congratulations!
The conference is over

The conference is over. Evaluations have been sent out, and here's just a taste of what attendees are saying about it:

"Thank you does not begin to describe my gratitude for this conference and the work it took to make it happen. It was incredible!"

"Bravo. Best conference ever."

"I left the conference with many, many new ideas to try in my church."

"An excellent conference - a regional that rivaled the quality and variety of a national conference."
The conference is over . . . or is it?
The conference itself may be over, but you can still experience every worship service, workshop, concert, plenary, and group learning session--plus all of the handouts! Thanks to a generous gift from Mark and Kathy Helge, almost the entire conference was recorded and can be available for you to experience. In fact, everyone who registered to attend the conference either in-person or virtually already has access to the whole conference. Register now to access all of the recorded sessions and handouts. The pre-conference registration price of $150 for ALCM members will be in place until September 1st. On September 2nd the price will increase to $195. See what the conference has to offer!
Valparaiso Conference Attendees

If you have not yet completed the conference evaluation, please do so as soon as possible. These evaluations are extremely valuable as a tool for planning future conferences. This is your chance to inform conferences you may be attending--let your voice be heard!

ALCM Friday August Webinar
All Things Bright and Beautiful?
Singing a Theology of Creation
Friday, August 12 - 2:00 pm Eastern

Is your congregation singing a robust theology of creation, ecological care, and environmental concerns? Hymn writers through the centuries provide a record of the church’s theology of creation. We will start with St. Francis of Assisi and conclude with hymns written in the twenty-first century.

NOTE: If you have already registered for the Summer or the Full Year Series, do not register again. You will receive a link to the webinar in the morning on the day of the webinar.

Planning next summer's vacation? Visit Philadelphia!

Now that the Valparaiso conference is over, it's time for you to begin thinking about the 2023 biennial conference in Philadelphia. There are a few details yet to finalize, and then registration can open. While you wait, we invite you to think about spending a few additional days vacationing in and around Philly. We've gathered a few ideas of things to do while you're there. It's not too early to begin planning for next summer!
Elections Are Coming!

Watch for the ALCM National Board election coming later this week. Information and instructions will be sent out via email and voting will be done electronically, so watch your mailbox this week!
Fourth Friday Happy Hour with ALCM
Friday, August 26 - 5:00 pm Eastern

Recognizing that virtual community IS real community, you are warmly invited to join "Fourth Friday Happy Hour with ALCM" on Zoom every fourth Friday at 5 p.m. Eastern. Moderated by President Nancy Raabe and Executive Director Jim Rindelaub, discussion will be oriented around a general theme each month, but the larger purpose is to encourage conversation, sharing, and community. Bring whatever thoughts, comments, or concerns are on your mind, and of course a libation of your choice. Click on this recurring link to join each month.
2023 Raabe Prize
Applications are now being accepted for the 2023 Raabe Prize for Excellence in Sacred Music. The Raabe Prize is established to recognize a recent musical work that promotes and extends the practice of church music as it is informed and shaped by Lutheran theological insight and worship practices. The composition so recognized will have been written during the five-year period prior to the year in which the prize is awarded and should be representative of a larger body of work by the composer. Preference will be given to those compositions that grow out of the heart of Lutheran worship – the song of the assembly that enables all to lift their voices in prayer, praise, and proclamation as they gather around Word and Sacrament.

Events are now being published both in the website calendar and in the monthly newsletter. Do you have an event that you'd like to include? ALCM members should log in and follow the link on the main members area page. Non-members should send event details to for consideration.

Are you a congregation looking for a musician?
A musician looking for a position?
ALCM can help!

Employment resources have been developed to assist congregations in the process of searching for and hiring a musician. Presented in a step-by-step format, these resources will guide you through the entire employment process.

The ALCM job listing service connects those looking for positions in the field of church music with congregations and other institutions that have openings. By completing an online job posting form, congregations can post their positions on the ALCM website where those looking for employment may view them.

Musicians searching for a job may view posted job openings on the ALCM website, where those looking for positions can view them. Both full-time and part-time positions are listed, and new positions are added as received.
