For many years, The Nature Trust and conservation partners in the Okanagan have been working to support and restore Burrowing Owl populations in BC. We have been building artificial burrows, banding and tracking the owlets as they migrate south, and protecting nesting areas by limiting disturbance.
These small, Red-listed, owls have been especially impacted by habitat loss due to development and agriculture because they make their nests in burrows in the ground. After they migrate south in the winter, many don’t return as far north as the Okanagan.
However, this May for the first time, a wildlife camera captured an adult Burrowing Owl returning to a burrow at White Lake. This is a landmark occurrence for conservationists, a sign that the strategies being implemented are working.
