2023 WCTU Annual Award Winners

Three of our 2023 Awards will be presented at our annual state council meeting on October 14th, 2023.

This year only the "Tim Gavin" Steelhead Award will be presented at CX3 in Spokane on Friday evening September 29th 5:00-8:00pm. Check the calendar of events at CX3 Calendar.

Tim lost his battle with cancer on October 25th, 2022. We are grateful for the more than 25 years of service Tim gave to Trout Unlimited in multiple states where he lived, and thankful Washington was one of those states. He will be remembered for many things, his wisdom and good counsel, his soft-spoken nature, his kindness and his dedication to 'giving back' and 'always showing up'.

The Chinook Award to a WA Trout Unlimited member goes to Steve Miller.
The Chinook Award to a WA Chapter or Alternative Engagement Group goes to Three Rivers TU Chapter.

The Steelhead Awards for Special leadership/commitment to excellence.

The Tim Gavin “Steelhead Award” to a WA Trout unlimited member goes to Dave Bouta.
The Phoenix “Steelhead Award” / to a WA Chapter or Alternative Engagement Group goes to Yakima Fly Fishers TU Chapter.

BAT Adventures around the state this summer!!

We've had a very busy summer of BAT work- trainings, campouts & fun! This group participated in the Clark County training in June. We are grateful to all the new members that will continue assessing culverts in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest!

Luke Kelly was the staff lead trainer at this event.

More training and video production took place in the Naches watershed in July. We camped for 2 days and completed a BAT training, video production with Liam Gallagher, and assessment of 18 culverts. Erin Eaton was staff lead trainer at this event. We met up again this past weekend to complete the Naches work.

We are grateful to all who attended the two weekend events for the incredible effort and work that has taken place in July & August to complete 34 culverts!! Only 2 left to go! Thank you all!!

WCTU welcomes Samantha Hinrichs as our new Communications Chair. Currently Samantha is working on CX3 with our Comms team Dannon Elora & Penny Mabie. Samantha is Associate Creative Director at POP and brings a wealth of talent in creative design and strategic development. We are thrilled that Samantha decided to volunteer to help us expand our reach and messaging across Washington and beyond through her creative skills and talents.

WCTU Annual State Meeting & Election of Officers - Leaders, mark your calendars & get registered!

Our annual meeting will be held at Red's Fly Shop Lodge Conference Room on Saturday October 14th, 2023 - 8:30am-3:00pm. Red's, a TU Business partner, is donating the conference room and the WCTU will host the meeting with lunch from "The Canyon River Grill" at Red's. Celebrate our award winning Council, which is all of you - with this event, cast your votes for new officers, share your chapter and council work, and hear about some amazing work our staff is doing in the state. After the meeting, fish the beautiful Yakima Canyon with TU friends and enjoy the weekend by casting your favorite October caddis to a rising rainbow or cutthroat trout!! The meeting will be in-person but we will have the option to attend remotely with our video Owl.

We Need Volunteer HELP in several areas, are you ready to join the leadership team?

Council Secretary - Our current secretary, Dan Walsh, will be stepping down in October. this position entails taking the minutes at 4 state meetings annually and distribute minutes to chapters. There are a variety of additional duties, but it is not a high time consuming position.

Fundraising Chair - the Council is looking for a volunteer with some degree of fundraising experience or background to help us with annual planning and execution, particularly heading into the giving season October -December. Volunteer hours average 5hrs/month with some months less and some more.

Marion Hiller - FFI Certified Casting Instructor, was front and center helping put on the casting lessons. Thank you Marion!
