National Book Lovers Day

National Book Lovers Day is celebrated on August 9th every year. It is an unofficial holiday to encourage us to put away our smartphones and celebrate reading and literature. Observing and celebrating National Book Lovers Day can happen in a variety of ways, all revolving around books and reading!

How to Celebrate National Book Lovers Day:

  1. Dive into a book!
  2. Visit a local library and become a member.
  3. Gather a few friends and start a National Book Lovers Day club or organize an event at work celebrating a favorite author.
  4. Gift books to friends and family.
  5. Watch a book adaptation such as Lord of the Rings, Sense and Sensibility, To Kill a Mockingbird, or Winnie the Pooh.
  6. Donate a book to the South Pasadena Friends of the Public Library or your local library bookstore.

But no matter the preference, whether choosing to read at home with a cup of tea, share ideas with friends and family, or visit your local library, enjoy your reading on National Book Lovers Day!

Thank You for Making Our Summer Reading Program a Success!

Silent Auction

The Friends of the Library Bookstore’s August Silent Auction features several historical books about California which were part of a large donation received from the estate of a respected local collector.

O California, Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Century California Landscapes and Observations is a lovely book from this collection. It features 109 landscapes from the earliest artists to the 1930s. The visual material is matched with literary passages from writers, artists, naturalists, settlers, and Native Americans.

A vintage book being offered this month is Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine. Bradbury lived in Southern California for more than 75 years and in his later years, many of his plays were performed at South Pasadena’s own Fremont Center Theatre. Published in 1957, Dandelion Wine stands out in the Bradbury literary canon as the author's most deeply personal work, a semi-autobiographical recollection of a magical small-town summer in 1928.

The following auction items will be on view at the South Pasadena Public Library in a glass case with numbered bidding cards displayed on top. Winning bidders will be notified by telephone at the end of the auction. Click on the link below to view a catalog containing details and images of all the books available for bidding.
