Book Review

"On Managing Yourself"

Harvard Business Review

Reviewed by Alejandra Juarez,

Juarez & Juarez Well-Being Consulting

I have been revisiting Harvard Business Review's 10 Must Reads. I am reading "On Managing Yourself," part of a six-book series this month.

As I continue on my journey toward professional success, this series allows me to reflect on my values and professional priorities and introspect on how I can perform at a higher level.

Some of my favorite articles in this collection are "How Will You Measure Your Life?" by Clayton M. Christensen, "How Resilience Works" by Diane L. Coutu, and "Moments of Greatness: Entering the Fundamental State of Leadership" by Robert E. Quin. It is worth mentioning that one of HBR's most-read articles, "Management Time: Who's Got the Monkey?" is included in this series.

This collection provides strong building blocks for professionals to focus on the most crucial member of their team - themselves!

A Message from the President

Planning Ahead...

Let the end-of-summer sales begin. I get a chuckle in August when all the ads start pouring out along with the back-to-school supply reminders. I guess I chuckle since my daughter is well beyond that stage (and getting married early thi September).

Our Meet and Greet series are certainly continuing. Come share with your peers what you have been up to this summer with a cold beer or soda and a slice of pizza.

Hope you will join us:

End-of-Summer Meet & Greet

Thursday, August 24th, 5:30-7:30PM

Shield's Pizza of Troy

1476 W. Maple Road

After that, we all start to prepare for the “back to school” mindset. Your MSE Detroit Board is in the same position. We are working to lock in the Fall programs. I think you will be pleased with our line-up.

We start our Fall programming on September 12th with a luncheon program. Yes luncheon….many of our members have been asking for us to mix up our programming times…we listened. Our first program “Overcoming the Noes” by Alejandra Juarez, an MSE Detroit Board member and health care expert and one of our friends from MHCC Dana McAllister Armenteros with The W Buchanan Group will be presenting at 11:00 am on September 12th. Registration is open, but seating is limited, so get your reservation early. You will be pleased to attend that program at the headquarters of SSDM, in Troy. You may recall that Nick Skislak, president of SSDM, was one of MSE Detroit’s award winners for innovation. It is a great meeting location.

We even have a video to introduce the program moderated by Chad Toms--you can find that video HERE. You can get more information on the program and register HERE.

Enjoy the month of August and as the song says “See you in September!”

Enjoy the sunshine and hope to see you on August 24th at Shield's.

Member Spotlight

Liliana Ospina Herbstreith

Founder

Hispanic Marketing Solutions LLC

MSE Detroit Member

Liliana is a Colombian immigrant, a journalist, and an entrepreneur who founded Hispanic Marketing Solutions LLC, Latinos En Michigan TV, and the Minority Education Freedom Foundation.

Liliana emigrated to Michigan from Bogota, Colombia, in 2005. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Social Communications with a Major in Journalism from the University of La Sabana in Colombia.

She is a bilingual professional who has 20 years of experience in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Translations, Copyediting and Marketing.

She began her career in CityTV, a news and entertainment TV channel in Bogota, Colombia, where she reported on local stories affecting people in Bogota. After that she worked as a TV production assistant for an independent TV production company, and later she became a press secretary for two Senators and a House Representative of the Colombian Congress, where she had the opportunity to develop local and national public relations and communications campaigns for her clients.

Liliana also has an acute knowledge of the Spanish language, which allows her to translate, proofread, and edit copies of different articles, speeches or any documents that have been translated from English to Spanish. She has been the copy editor for the Spanish edition of Plastic News on Plastimagen 2016, 2017, and 2019, which is the most important plastic business conference in Latin America. She is also a Voice Over artist with years of experience doing voice overs for news and corporate videos, among others.

In the United States, Liliana has worked in different companies and sectors such as the former ad agency GlobalHue, which at one point was the largest minority owned advertising company in Michigan, the nonprofit organization Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services (DASAS), the cereal company Kellogg's Corporation in Calhoun County, El Vocero Hispano Newspaper in the city of Grand Rapids, and most recently in her company Hispanic Marketing Solutions LLC – Latinos En Michigan TV in Howell.

Latinos En Michigan TV is a digital news outlet that produces original content through video and written stories that cover events and different news and all information of importance or interest to the Hispanic / Latino community in the state of Michigan. Liliana and her husband created Latinos En Michigan TV in 2016 to produce positive video stories about the Hispanic community in Michigan.

Because of her vast experience in TV Production, Liliana Ospina does the interviews, the camera and editing of each and every story from Latinos En Michigan TV and then she shares the content in social media networks and the website latinosenmichigantv.com

In 2019, Liliana created the Latino Talent Awards, after producing video stories for a section of her digital platform called "Talentos Latinos" (Latino Talent), which highlights the positive stories and the work of individuals and Hispanic entrepreneurs, who, through their dedication, work, and volunteering, are improving the lives of many Hispanics in Michigan, especially in southwest Detroit.

In 2020 the Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce gave Liliana Ospina the Chamber Advancement Award for her leadership and commitment to the Hispanic businesses in Michigan. In 2021 Liliana Ospina founded the Minority Education Freedom Foundation a non-profit organization that is providing community and educational programs, cross-cultural interaction, and art experiences to allow women, children, immigrants and minorities to get better opportunities and improve their lives, and in 2022 Ford Hispanic/Latino Network gave Liliana the Leo Padilla Award, an award recognizing a prominent Hispanic/Latino (Ford-not Ford) whose work on behalf of the Hispanic community has helped promote Hispanic issues nationally.

In 2023, Liliana was reappointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to the state’s Advisory Council on Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing to represent individuals knowledgeable in the field of deafness, for a term commencing May 18, 2023, and expiring January 18, 2026.
