August 2023
Our Mission: Build Leaders and Lead Collaboration among Government and Industry to Develop Multi Disciplined Solutions to National Security and Infrastructure Challenges
From the President:
Greetings SAME NoVA Post Members!

The August Lunch Program with Washington Headquarters Services (WHS), Post Awards, and Board Transition event kicked off the new Board year. The joint efforts of the Board to execute this event highlights the teamwork evident across the Post.

I would like to thank Dave Westrick, Matt Muhlenkamp, and Hossam “Sam” Kassab for the insights to the incredible work WHS is carrying out with support from the SAME A/E/C community to keep the Pentagon operational.

I am honored to be selected as your incoming Post President. I would like to highlight Jenny Bowers’ leadership for the past year, and her success in setting the Post on a path for continued success. Welcome to the new and returning Board members who I am confident will successfully lead the Post into the future. Your Post Board will be holding a strategy session on September 19th to shape the Post’s upcoming year and beyond. Setting the goals and direction will continue the path laid by earlier Post leadership and Board members. My focus during the upcoming year will be to align Board efforts to meet Post members’ needs and desires while realizing the SAME National 2025 Strategic Goals and anticipating the conditions for future Post success.

Your Programs committee has two magnificent events lined up for September. The Resilience event with SAME Strategic Partner Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) will offer awareness of the Executive Order on Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability (14057) and Federal Building Performance Standards culminating in Electrification’s importance in achieving reduction in greenhouse gases. The 1st Annual Sporting Clay event will bring members together for some fun and networking at the Bull Run Shooting Center.

If you have any ideas, suggestions, comments, improvements, or criticisms, please contact me or any of the Post Board members to discuss. I look forward to the upcoming year, and I am extremely grateful for your collaboration and commitment to your Post to make everything possible!

Thanks for your incredible support of the NoVA Post!
Phil,
Lt Col Philip Hicks, PE (AL,VA), PMP, USAF (Ret)

2023-2024 Post Award Winners
Every year, we recognize those Post members that go above and beyond to help make our NoVA Post successful. We recognized the following members at our August Lunch Event for their hard work in 2022. Round of applause for them all!
August Washington Headquarters Service,
Board Transition and Award Event
The SAME NoVA Post welcomed members of the Engineering and Construction Division at the Facilities Services Directorate, Washington Headquarters Services for a general review of the overall construction program including structural improvement and energy program.

Before the speakers gave their presentation, we did our Annual Awards, as noted above, and inducted our 2023-2024 Board Members. We had over 25 of our Board Members in attendance! Please check out more pictures in our Flickr site.
SAME Post Leaders Workshop
Every year SAME National has a Leadership workshop for Post Leaders from all the Posts across the globe. This year Jenny Bowers and Julie Smiley attended the workshop on behalf of the Guam Post and the NoVA Post. There are sessions to support the Post Leadership in running the Post and opportunities to collaborate with SAME's National Office and other Post Leaders about best practices.

As a special treat, they had a touching transition of the Executive Director position from Joe Schrodel, BG, PE, F.SAME to Maj. Gen. Mike Wehr, PE. USA (Ret.)
SAME Summer Camp - from a Mentor's Perspective
Next month we will be highlighting our SAME Summer Campers and their experiences at the various camps.

  • Design, construction, and testing of concrete beams
  • Design, construction of doghouses
  • Construction and testing of functional cardboard boats to be race in relay races
  • Engineering Reaction Course (various construction themed team sporting events)
  • Academy Labs in Review (various activities taught by department staff of USAFA)

Leadership and Mentoring Program (LMP)
The SAME NoVA & DC Posts have been planning and coordinating the 2023 Leadership & Mentoring Program.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING THE 2024 LEADERSHIP & MENTORING PROGRAM, please contact Ed Chamberlayne.
On 18 July 2023, our LMP was graciously hosted at the HQ of the US Army Corps of Engineers Institute for Water Resources by the Director Joe D. Manous, Jr., PE, PhD, D.WRE (and F.SAME!). Joe is a former NoVA Post President and SAME Fellow who always takes time to mentor, advise, and teach. Our session was a collaborative discussion focused on “Expectations and Outcomes – Is Your Career Going Where You Want?” Huge thanks to Joe for hosting the class – we also appreciated the free parking!
Next, the LMP will meet on 13 September 2023 with the Honorable Lucian Neimeyer, CEO, Building Cyber Security at the HKS office in DC. Topic = “Leadership Lessons from a Career of Spectacular Failures and Marginal Success – Improve Each Rep” with a special research assignment (Japanese philosophy of Ikigai and be ready to briefly state what their converged Venn diagram reveals from the four aspects of life), which I can’t tell is a joke or not….
