Online Lectures that Enhance Museum Visits
Expand your understanding of artists and their styles through illustrated and informative online lectures. Many of our upcoming art appreciation classes also serve as previews of exhibits currently on view in New York City and beyond. Where available in the catalog, register for both the lecture and the companion walking tour for the optimal experience. Cross-referenced course numbers are contained in the class descriptions.

Inspired by a recent exhibition at the Met, Page Knox is offering an entire series this fall on Dada and Surrealism (Courses 12054 through 12066). Classes meet on Wednesday mornings starting September 6, 2023, and run through December. Each class requires separate registration. Fans of dadaism may also be interested in her related class, Female Surrealists and Their Transatlantic Voyages (12227) on Thursday, September 28, 2023.
Fall lectures that offer companion walking tours led by Knox include Art as Lens to American Sociopolitical Upheaval of the 1930s (12128) and Origins of Fauvism (12126). In addition, Artistic Rivalry Between Edouard Manet and Edgar Degas (12127) provides excellent preparation for those intending to see the Manet/Degas exhibit, soon to open at the Met. All of Knox's online classes will be recorded for later viewing by enrolled students.

Riva Blumenfeld will also cover recent and current exhibitions in her upcoming online classes. These virtual tours are suitable for those who want to enhance their understanding of their previous or future visit as well as those without plans to view the artwork in person. Wangechi Mutu: Intertwined at the New Museum (12068) is on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. Alex Katz: Gathering at the Guggenheim Museum (12069) meets on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition at the MoMA (12070) is scheduled for Tuesday, November 28, 2023.
Fresh from leading fascinating classes last term on portraiture of humans and of horses, Bob Potter, a docent at the Yale Center for British Art, will take students on a virtual trip there to see Masterworks from the Yale Center for British Art (12085) on Tuesday, September 19, 2023. Emphasis will be on paintings from the eighteenth through the twentieth century that explore the art of landscape and portrait by leading artists. Class will be recorded and made available to registered students for later viewing.

Shilpi Chandra returns to SAS on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, for Museum Preview: Learning to Paint in Premodern China at the Met (12235). Examine themes of the exhibition and discuss the paths that important Chinese artists in each era took in their quest to become renowned artists. The companion walking tour meets on Thursday, October 5, 2023 (Course 12236).

Without fear of bad weather or lost luggage, Ronnit Vasserman transports students virtually to Marfa, Texas, Art Mecca in the Chihuahua Desert (12205) on Monday, October 16, 2023. The itinerary includes Highway 90's outrageous Prada store, a land art installation by artists Elmgreen and Dragset, Hotel Paisano’s Greasewood Gallery, Ayn Foundation, Judd Foundation, Ballroom Marfa, Building 98, and the Chinati Foundation.
Single session classes on a variety of art appreciation topics are also in the fall schedule.
