MARCH STORMS

BUSINESS ASSISTANCE GRANT PROGRAM

As of May 2023, Tulare County has received over 2,700 flood-related damage assessment reports. For certain storm damage and mitigation efforts performed by local businesses, ranchers, and farmers, there may be no funding available through traditional channels. To help close this gap and support local businesses, the County has established a Disaster Assistance Fund. To find out if your business, ranch, or farm qualifies, click the button below.

August started with National Night Out Events in Lindsay and Exeter. Thank you to everyone who came out! The next week was the ribbon cutting of the Lindsay Recharge Basin which will increase water supply resilience in the area. I also had a chance to talk with Lt. Gov. Kounalakis' staff this month and shared what makes Tulare County great and how the state can work with us to help our residents. On August 22 I met with the CHP to discuss driving on our rural roads. Please drive safely and courteously, and obey traffic laws!

Two of my favorite events this month let me update two District 1 communities on the State of Tulare County. At the Exeter Chamber of Commerce Annual Report & Meeting, I shared a presentation that covered the County's achievements and budget plans. At the Visalia Chamber State of Local Government lunch, Supervisor Shuklian joined me, Visalia Mayor Poochigian and Vice-Mayor Taylor to discuss how we collaborate with the City of Visalia to do more. Roads were a topic at both events. If you have a County road issue, report it HERE.

One of the most significant meetings of the month was with California State Transportation Secretary Omashakin and Caltrans Director Tavarez highlighting local transportation, transit, pedestrian, affordable housing projects, and many other local efforts. The main ask of the meeting was for a commitment to fund the 16-mile major maintenance/widening of Highway 99 from Delano to Pixley which has an $8 million shortfall due to increased construction costs. Additionally, a long-term commitment to finish Highway 99 widening throughout Tulare County, as well as Madera and Merced Counties. My State of the County presentation at the Tulare State of the City event highlighted Tulare County’s budget and financial position, significant Tulare Hillman Health Campus County investments, a March 2023 flood recap, as well as many additional local road projects.

It's the time of year for children to be back to school; my three kids are, and I wish all students a productive and fun year full of learning!

In August, I had two state-level meetings to discuss Tulare County's needs. Staff members for Lt. Governor Kounalakis' office were interested in our issues and the conversation was well received. On August 10, CA Transportation Secretary Omishakin and Caltrans Director Tavarez came to Tulare County to meet with TCAG and see our local projects. Widening Hwy 99 was a top discussion item.

On August 24, I was part of the State of Local Government discussion held by the Visalia Chamber of Commerce and moderated by The Sun-Gazette. Supervisor Micari and I joined Visalia Mayor Brian Poochigian and Vice-Mayor Brett Taylor to share how we coordinate efforts to get more done. The next morning, I gave a County update to the Visalia Breakfast Lions. Janet Zaragosa-Martinez, the Tulare County parks outreach coordinator, joined me to share a Parks update. That night, I enjoyed the Salt + Light Summer Soiree fundraiser with my colleagues to support the Neighborhood Village project for our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

For many of us, summer is a time to spend quality time together, whether it's taking a vacation, enjoying the warm weather, or working hard to accomplish tasks. As we transition into this new season, let's carry that sense of togetherness and family time with us. Whether you're a student starting a new school year or an adult looking to improve your talents, there's always room for growth. Take advantage of the fresh start that comes with change, new weather, and opportunity! Set some goals for yourself. Maybe it's time to take on a new challenge, learn a new skill, or help someone in need.

As we move into the second half of the year, it's a good time to reflect on any goals you've set for yourself at the beginning of the year. Are you on track to achieve them? Use this time to recommit to your goals and make a plan for how you can achieve them in the coming months. Embrace this new season as an opportunity to reconnect with family, learn and grow, and recommit to our goals for the year ahead. Ready, Set, Grow!
