Aligning People, Purpose, and Community

August 2023

A Message from AFP-GLAC President,

Lisa J. Baxter

August is here and record-breaking heat aside, we are in the third quarter. That somewhat magical stretch of time where you may be amid donor renewal discussions, revisiting strategic plans, preparing end of year campaigns, or perhaps taking some much-deserved time off. Wherever you are, I can imagine that you’re doing the best you can. Our sector is shifting and if you’ve read the 2023 USA Giving Report you may be thinking about things like the future of donor advised funds, the impact of the 2022 dip and how to use all the data out there to advise and plan for your organizations. It. Is. A. Lot. Hang in there!

August is also Black Philanthropy Month (BPM), a “global celebration and concerted campaign to elevate African-descent giving and funding equity.” The BPM 2023 theme “Love In Action is a powerful reminder of what our work requires and what we need to tap into when we’re building community around our missions. One of BPM 2023’s core organizing questions is:

What would philanthropy look like if it were driven by love of all humanity including Black people?

I encourage you to really meditate on this question and think about how you’re showing up in love and humanity in your nonprofits and our sector.

This has been such a transformational year for our chapter for many reasons, but it is the love in action from our board, staff and members that truly make it worthwhile.

This is our time.

To create a new direction.

To be an armada of good.

In service,

Lisa J. Baxter

2023 AFP-GLAC President

Support our Sister Chapter, AFP Aloha

Our hearts go out to the people of Hawaii and all those impacted by the West Maui Fires.

Please see the message below from our friends at the Aloha Chapter.

Mahalo nui to all who have reached out to us about how to best support Aloha Chapter members and nonprofit organizations on the island of Maui where wildfires have taken lives, homes, businesses, and entire communities.

We encourage you to visit Maui County to learn more about Maui’s needs, ways to support, and share with your networks, friends, & family.

Our partner, Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, is providing resources through the MAUI STRONG FUND to support nonprofit organizations doing critical work on Maui during this time.

Your support today makes a difference to Maui’s residents.

Me ka mahalo nui,

AFP Aloha Chapter Board of Directors
