August 2024 Newsletter

As we gear into this new school year, it’s good to remember that what we do is critically important and appreciated. And whether you are a faith-based or secular school, it’s good to know that God appreciates the important role that you and your teachers play in the lives of young people. With that in mind, I’d like to share one of my favorite writings, “And God Says Thanks!”

And God Says Thanks!

I have entrusted you with the care of my children.

They are special to me.

They are my gift to you and to the world.

Although they may disagree, they are young and inexperienced.

They are also curious and full of energy, sometimes too much energy.

They are ready to learn, but sometimes unwilling to let you or their classmates know that.

They are searching and you are here to guide them … I’m glad of that.

I hope they are as much a source of joy to you as they are to me.

You, too, are a source of joy to me.

You know and have experienced more of life --

the discipline and sacrifice involved in accepting the responsibility for helping young people to learn and grow.

Not everyone is willing to do that.

Thank you.

Life is not always easy.

Educating children and teenagers is certainly not easy; I know that.

There is so much to contend with --

discouragement, apathy, misunderstandings.

No one knows and appreciates your efforts as much as I do. Thank you.

Young people ask so much of you – ask for your time and energy, your patience and ever more of your patience!

They ask you to grow with them, change with them, encourage them, discipline them.

Sometimes it seems like more than you can handle, but you haven’t given up. Thank you.

Please, let me assure you, I believe in you.

I depend on you.

I love you. Thank you!

INPEA is grateful for all you do to support your students and school communities! We hope to see many of you at INPAC 2024 on September 26 and 27!

Earlier this week, we covered how to host legislators in your school. You can find a copy of that presentation plus additional resources at the links below.

Join our next coalition call to learn more about how to engage your school families. We’ll be talking about how to identify school choice stories, choosing parents to testify, and resources available to prepare families for engagement during the 2025 legislative session.

USDA Update - Federal Hot Lunch

The USDA recently sent out guidance regarding religious-based schools participating in the federal hot lunch program because they are seen as direct recipients of federal funding. This would impact participation in religious-based activities. The Administration quickly retracted this guidance. Reach out to John Elcesser if you have any questions.

School Improvement Plan Submissions Due October 4!

IDOE’s Office of School Support and Transformation is accepting Comprehensive Need Assessment (CNA) and SIP submissions through Friday, October 4, on this JotForm. In accordance with IC 20-31-5-1, public and state-accredited non-public schools must develop a strategic and continuous three-year SIP, and review these plans annually. All schools identified as Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI), Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI), or Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) are required to submit SIPs and CNAs annually. All other schools must submit SIPs during the 2025-2026 school year. Use of IDOE’s ESSA-aligned SIP template is recommended, however, schools may use any template as long as all required portions are included. This memo provides additional information. Contact IDOE’s Office of School Support and Transformation with any questions.

AP and Cambridge Exam Funding

Indiana’s biennial budget provides funding to cover the fees for AP and Cambridge International exams taken by Indiana students in grades nine through 12 who are enrolled in an accredited public or non-public school. A maximum of three exams per student, per year may be funded. Additional information can be found in this memo. Contact IDOE’s Office of Student Pathways and Opportunities with any questions.

Legislation Not Pertaining to Non-Public Schools

There has been a lot of press around legislation passed session dealing with attendance/truancy (SEA 282) and cellphone usage in schools (SEA 185). Neither of these bills apply to non-public schools but may be considered a best practice.
