Dear RBUSD Students & Families,
Welcome to the 2024-25 school year! We look forward to our students returning next Wednesday, August 21! RBUSD has a lot to be proud of, and it’s all thanks to you. Together, we will keep the momentum going as we focus on our Strategic Plan goals, persevere through challenges, and create lasting memories.
At RBUSD, we embrace the Japanese concept of Ikigai, which means "reason for being." Derived from the words ‘Iki’ (life) and ‘gai’ (value or worth), Ikigai represents what brings joy, life purpose, and the inspiration to get out of bed each day. The good news is that, according to the Japanese, everyone has an Ikigai. For some, it may take soul searching to find, while for others, it comes naturally. Our goal is to provide students with a learning environment rich in experiences and opportunities that will help them discover their Ikigai, and realize their passion and purpose. Ikigai is the pilot light that keeps our inner flame of ambition burning, and we encourage our entire school community to reflect on their own Ikigai.

In RBUSD, measurable actions and goals are crucial to ensuring that we work together towards a shared vision. Equally important is reflecting on how we can positively impact the goals, intentions, and Ikigai of others. Often, our own life’s worth is enhanced when we focus on enhancing the lives of those around us. I invite you to join me in adopting this mindset.
RBUSD is on the map, thanks to the numerous programs and experiences that our students enjoy and in which they thrive. As we celebrate our achievements, let us not forget our primary focus: that each and every RBUSD student achieves academic growth and experiences social-emotional wellbeing. We expect every student to have a positive journey through RBUSD, and we believe this is a team effort. Students, staff, administration, parents/guardians, and our entire school community are key stakeholders in moving RBUSD forward. We all play an integral role, and by remaining united and committed to excellence, we make RBUSD GREAT!

Three Key Characteristics
Let us continue our road to excellence by challenging our students to acquire and refine three key characteristics that are essential for success and happiness at school, a future career, and in life: involvement, advocacy, and resilience.
| | |
Get Involved!
Students, how will you enhance your educational experience and contribute to your amazing school community while igniting your personal interests? First and foremost, get involved! Whether it is an activity/event, club, volunteering, student council/ASB, athletics, or an interest outside of school, find something that speaks to your passion and purpose. Students who are involved in something beyond the classroom tend to perform better academically, and more importantly, have a better overall school experience! Let this be the year that you try something new and challenge yourself. Every school has a lot to offer.

Advocate
Students, we value your voice. As you journey through RBUSD, think of ways you can advocate for yourself and others. Ask questions. Ask for help. Assist a peer. Advocacy is key, in order to ensure others understand what you need to be successful.
| |
Be Resilient
Students, in life we encounter road bumps. It is inevitable. Having a positive mindset and the determination to persevere is essential; we recognize it is not always easy. It may take time and practice. Remember, your RBUSD support system (teachers, counselors, coaches, administrators, staff, your peers) are here to help you navigate life’s hurdles and pitfalls. Believing you can learn from these moments and becoming a stronger individual will help you thrive on this journey. This is what it means to be resilient.

As we kick off the new school year, I want to wish everyone a smooth and successful start. Let’s embrace the opportunities ahead, support one another, and strive for excellence in everything we do. Welcome back to what promises to be a fantastic 2024-25 school year. Let’s make it a year filled with passion, purpose, and positive memories!
Your Superintendent,
Nikki Wesley, Ed.D.
