President's Message

I took a lovely walk on the boardwalk beach in Sandwich this morning. It was low tide and the mist was just starting to rise. I could hear the boats coming through Cape Cod canal but could not see them. The piping plovers were aflutter behind me while in front of me flocks of sea fowl were feeding in the surf. I thought to myself, I’ve had it wrong all this time! The Byrds were actually singing “To everything, tern, tern, tern” when they did that famous tune! My wife Carol just moaned as I explained it to her.

I am super excited to be starting this Fall semester, even though it means we are nearing the end of a gorgeous summer. The rain and sun came at just the right times, but I know from the fading daylilies that classes will be starting up before too long. Registration is just 13 days away. Hurray!

On our website are over 70 classes for you to peruse, as well as the registration form and instructions. Some classes are held only in our classrooms, some are only on zoom, and some are hybrid-zoom, combining in-person with zoom as is practiced in most classrooms at the college.

New this semester is a number of short videos from our coordinators, talking about their classes. You will find them on our website after the class descriptions. Please write us to say if you like them or not.

Our registration form is now fully digital, so you can now download, complete, and email back to us your class selections, as well as your payment by credit card, without ever touching paper.

That said, we continue to print catalogs so those of you that prefer paper can make your selections and fill out your forms by hand, write a check and post, as in the past. Or email your registration, but inform us and then pay your dues by check. So many choices! You should shortly find catalogs at your local library, and of course always in the main office.

Registration is August 19th.

All registration forms that arrive either by email or US mail in our offices by August 16th will be assigned classes until they are filled. If you have included a second or even third choice, they will be assigned in the event of a full class – so it’s useful to select an alternate.

Of course, you can register after Aug 19th , but expect some classes to be filled.

You will see that fees have increased slightly, to $125 per semester. The last increase was over eight years ago, and expenses have gone up quite a bit since them.

I hope you agree that ALL remains an incredible bargain. If I count what I have learned from the classes I have taken and taught, compounded by the friends I have met, then add all the fun at the many social events, well – I can’t really put a price on that!

Enjoy the rest of your summer, and see you soon.

I am delighted to write about our fall 2024 course offerings.

The fall 2024 catalog is now listed on the ALL Website and the printed catalogs will be distributed to area libraries, senior centers, and a few well placed locations around the Cape very soon

We extend a great big thank you to all of our wonderful coordinators!

They will be teaching over 70 courses with 40 of them in person in the classroom. The rest will be in Zoom and in Hybrid format.

In addition to our tried-and-true courses, we will be offering a wide selection of new courses as well as some courses that have returned from past years.

The Curriculum Committee is excited and is looking forward to sharing the semester ahead with you.

Reflections 2025

Another year begins for the Academy for Lifelong Learning.

Also the planning of the publication of this year's Reflections.

For those of you who have yet to hear about Reflections:

In 2000, ALL published a compilation of writings and art of the membership. The first edition was titled Senior Reflections, later shortened to Reflections.

The Founders of this anthology wanted to display a collection showcasing members’ creative abilities in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, photography and art - reflecting memories, insights, humor, and philosophy gathered from their lifelong experiences

Life experience - our years of living provide us with many varied and meaningful experiences. Members have distinguished themselves in the world of business, academia, arts and science, the military, and so many other fields during a lifetime. All of us have something to share that peers and the community would benefit from reading and viewing.

Reflections offers all those who dare to express themselves the place to share your thoughts and perspectives. A reflection of who you are at this point in your life.

Please read past issues, clear your day for a moment to write, take a photo, or whatever.

And then dare to submit your work for the upcoming edition.

You have something to share.

From The ALL Media Archives

This month we are featuring Steven Anderson, who had offered “The History of Massachusetts; Pride and Prejudice” as a course at ALL.

Steve, a lifelong resident of Massachusetts, is a retired trial lawyer who traveled the state for his clients.

His interest in local history was enhanced by plaques and memorials he read at courthouses while waiting for judges or juries, mostly judges.

This interview was part of the ALL series of podcasts called “Hail the Historians” which put special emphasis on past and present ALL Coordinators of History. It was recorded in November, 2023. Those of you who viewed it last winter may enjoy viewing it a second time.

Please click on the link at the end of this article to watch this interesting visual/podcast and learn about the history of Massachusetts through Steve’s unique perspective.
