The Five Excellences:

Poetry

Monday, August 19, 2024

1 - 2 p.m. EDT

Join us for an online class taught by

Hal Caswell

Senior Teacher

China has a very long tradition of poetry, which has had an enormous influence on poetry in the English language. In China, poetry is considered one of the "excellences." Professor Cheng Man Ch’ing, who brought tai chi chuan to the West in the 1960s, was known as a Master of Five of those Excellences, including poetry, and encouraged his students to study it.

In this class, we will experience some poems together, listen to some poems, and recite some using the movements of tai chi. Above all, we will hopefully have fun!

Open to all students and teachers.

This class is FREE for TCF members and $20 for non-members.

Tai Chi Lessons From My Octopus Teacher

The 2021 film My Octopus Teacher documents a year spent by filmmaker Craig Foster forging a relationship with an octopus in a South African kelp forest.

The documentary provides profound insights into the natural world through the lens of a unique human-animal relationship. Tai chi practitioners, in particular, can glean valuable lessons from the film, drawing parallels between the octopus’s movements and the principles of tai chi.
