Peace and Tranquility

Black Prong and the Goethe State Forest

When you come to enjoy fine dining, horseback riding in the 53,000 acre Goethe State Forest, swimming and fitness, yoga, pickleball, and more to come, we’re committed to preserving the peace and tranquility of our resort and the forest that surrounds it.

Beginning November 1, all accommodations at Black Prong – cabins, tiny homes, Airstreams and RV hookups – will come equipped with brand new lithium-battery-powered golf carts or utility vehicles for use on the property. Except for loading and dropping off supplies and people, guest cars and trucks will be confined to three designated parking spaces close to their respective accommodations. There will be four ways of getting around our 90-acre resort –walking, biking, horseback riding/carriage driving or quiet electric transport.

For those who have visited Black Prong in the past, you know how important the special character of Black Prong is – a place of peace and beauty in an increasingly noisy, cluttered, and chaotic world. And for those of you yet to experience the peace and tranquility of Black Prong, we look forward to hosting you in our insulated world surrounded by the sounds of nature.

"On the Trails" with Emily!

An exploration of Goethe’s Flora and Fauna

August Species: Loblolly Bay (Gordonia lasianthus)

Emily stated: I was out riding on the northwestern trails, just off of Griffis road the other day when I came across an interesting plant that I was unfamiliar with. At first I thought it was a type of magnolia as it was a small tree with large white flowers, but upon closer inspection I realized it was not. The leaves were small ovals with smooth edges, but the flower almost looked like a giant apple blossom. I used my app “Seek” by iNaturalist, which immediately identified it as Loblolly Bay. I learned that this is a native species that is found from the Gulf Coast up to the coastline of Virginia. These trees are rather small but definitely noticeable with their beautiful flowers and are often used for decorative gardening. The wood can also be used for cabinetmaking, the pulp for paper making and historically the bark was used to create a red dye that can be used as a tanning agent. The flowers bloom from July to September and are fragrant and attract native pollinators. They like to grow in acidic, swamp pinelands, so I hope I might find them in other places in the Goethe.

Emily Galka (shown with her horse Lisa) is Black Prong's Trail Riding Manager and resident naturalist.
