Welcome Kits

Many refugees and asylees arrive in Sacramento with little more than a suitcase full of their belongings.

Opening Doors steps in to help by preparing their new homes. This involves securing housing and equipping it with essential items such as towels, bedding, and kitchenware. For families with infants, we also provide crucial supplies, including diapers, wipes, and car seats.

This is where our community of welcome can truly make a difference. Welcome Kits are collections of room-specific items that are essential for setting up a new home.

Donating Welcome Kits or the individual items they contain is a simple yet powerful way to support newly arrived refugees and help them begin their new lives with dignity and comfort.

Currently, there is a need for all types of Welcome Kits. We are also accepting the individual items that make up Welcome Kits. New items are preferred but we will accept gently use items. There is an urgent need for the following items to set up homes for our newest neighbors:

  • Blankets and Comforters
  • Toothbrushes
  • Towels
  • Silverware
  • Pots and Pans

RSVP for an upcoming Welcome Kit Drop Off Day:

August 21, 9-11 am
September 19, 9-11 am

Preparing a Home for a New Arrival

When I started with Opening Doors in mid-June, I was thrilled about all the different ways we help families in need. One experience I was especially looking forward to was setting up homes for arriving families after I’d seen the recent story on Opening Door’s Instagram. Just four weeks into my new role as the Communications Manager, I got my chance to be part of this life-changing process.

On a regular day at my desk, a coworker mentioned that a family from Afghanistan would be arriving soon, and we needed to prepare an apartment for them. Eager to contribute, I jumped at the chance to join the team. It was my opportunity to see firsthand the impact of our work and to play a small part in welcoming a new family to our community.
