“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moths nor rust destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

TREASURE
I was 19 years old, it was my sister’s wedding day, and the whole family was getting dressed and ready. My mother asked me to run upstairs and get her treasured floating opal earrings and necklace, a gift from my dad many years before. I retrieved them and started back downstairs to give them to her when, to my horror, one of the earrings dropped and broke! I feared the worst, but my mother’s response when I showed her the broken earring was, “It’s just a thing!”
I couldn’t believe my ears because I knew how much she loved those earrings. But my mother has always been a faith-filled, grace-filled woman and she was living that out on that day, and I have never forgotten it.
Even though she treasured that gift from my dad, she never put things before relationships and demonstrated to me what God’s Word teaches in Matthew 6:19-21. My mother is now 96 years old and still has a child-like faith, with her focus always on Jesus.
In our world today, much focus is on attaining the latest and greatest in technology, fashion, cars or experiences. Keeping up with the Joneses is not what Jesus wants us to seek.
In fact, in Matthew 19:21, when asked by a rich man, "What must I do to get eternal life?" Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then, come follow me."
I pray that we would all put relationships before things, especially our relationship with the One who provides all that we possess. It all belongs to God, anyway, so let's take to heart the words of Matthew 6 and long for our relationship with Jesus to be our greatest treasure, which no thief can take from us, nor anything on earth can destroy.
After all, it is for our own good, that we store up treasures in heaven, as that is our goal... to spend eternity with God!

What are you going to do with it?
August is a month in many parts of the country that signifies the last days of summer. In many places school begins after Labor Day.
In the Valley of the Sun, August is when school resumes for most people. As we look forward to fall, there will be many things that are going to be exciting as we enter our fiftieth anniversary year in 2025.
After a very busy summer of mission trips; camps; bible studies; VBX and more, let us not forget that our primary purpose here is not to be all things to all people, or do more and more and more, but to live out our mission statement: "To love those who don’t know Jesus, and grow those who do."
How have you lived that out in your faith life this past summer? How will you live it out this fall?
I have always loved the challenge contained within the story about the pastor who was complimented on his sermon after worship services. After the person had said, "That was a good sermon," he responded, "Thank you. Now, what are you going to do with it?"
May we think on these things!
In Christ,
Pastor Jeff Ruby, Lead Pastor

Mount Ararat is located where Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Armenia come together. The highest peak, Greater Ararat, stands at 16,854 feet. There is a second peak next to it, known as Lesser Ararat, which stands at 12,782 feet. These peaks are part of a larger mountain range which stretches within a pocket of land in eastern Turkey. The book of Genesis tells us that Noah's ark "came to rest on the mountains of Ararat" (Genesis 8:4).
|
|
|
Explorers have long trekked this mountain and the areas around it looking for evidence of the Ark. The true power in the story, however, rests not in the ark, but in the power and promises of God.

As students head back to school, there are some of our littlest ones who can use a little extra help with reading skills at Palomino Primary, a K-3 grade school in the Paradise Valley Unified School District.
At La Casa de Cristo, there is a small group of people who have selflessly given of their time to tutor 1st grade children in reading. Esther Kovacs, who has volunteered as a tutor for years, said, "We have found that it is gratifying to see the progress our students have made. Our consistent, daily presence has made a profound difference in their ability to read. In fact, we have been so successful that the principal has asked us to not only help in 1st grade, but also to help in Kindergarten."
|
|
At Palomino Primary, the approach is to focus on the "whole child," which means that all needs are met so that the child can succeed. The school has a Boys and Girls Club, a dental clinic, a medical clinic, a clothing store and food pantry for families who are in need, and this wonderful tutoring program which would not be possible without the selfless people who saw a need and found a way to fill it.
La Casa de Cristo member, Kim Ludwig, who volunteers as a reading tutor, had this to say, "I love helping because it's so fun to see the progress of the kids. It's very exciting to see that I'm helping them to know all their words."
Please consider joining this team, as they are in need of many new volunteers for the new students who are about to begin school. If you love seeing the spark in a child's eyes when they "get it," then this is the place for you. If you can help one or two days a week for 2-4 hours, please contact Esther at ejk4242@yahoo.com or 480-544-0552. You will be blessed as you are empowering and being a blessing to these children!
