Ethically Speaking
Social Workers, Professionalism, and the NASW Code of Ethics
What is Professionalism in Social Work?
by Terri Cooley-Bennett, DSW Candidate, LCSW, LSCSW, CCDP-D, TTS
| According to the NASW Ethical Standards, section 5.01, social workers should advocate for superior standards when it comes to practice. It is the responsibility of the social worker to not only abide by the mission and values of the social work profession, but to seek to advance the profession through practice, research, and communication. It is the obligation of the social worker to influence and advance the profession by participating in the community and by imparting knowledge. In addition, social workers should assume a leadership role to ensure that social work practice is legitimate and practiced by qualified individuals. |

| Your Inspiration for the Month | Your Inspiration for the Month is honoring Civic Health month with a poem called “Democracy Americana” by Myronn Hardy. The poem has a lovely lyrical litany in juxtaposition to the theme of what’s behind us as a nation and what’s next. It twists a mirror and causes us to ask as we reflect, “Who are we?” It’s not an easy poem, but not all poetry should be. And, during an important election year, it feels timely! | | |

In the animated movie “The Incredibles” there’s a brief throwaway exchange between Bob Parr (the secret identity of superhero Mr. Incredible) and his wife, Helen (the secret identity of Elastigirl). Helen calls Bob in the middle of a rough day to tell him, “We’re now OFFICIALLY moved in.” Bob responds coolly, “And the last three years don’t count because…?”
“Because I finally unpacked the last box.” She adds, laughingly, “Why do we have so much junk?”
