Our Donation Center Thanks You

“The team has had ample help at the Donation Center this summer. Thanks in large part to our volunteers, we’ve been able to meet the needs of new families by setting up their homes with requested furniture items prior to their moving in and keeping our shelves stocked with food items, decor, and kitchenware to supplement their physical needs. Volunteer groups like Desert Financial have also made a big impact on sorting and labeling the large quantities of clothing we’ve received in donations. We’ve had a number of first-time volunteers this summer who have been tremendously helpful and have been a great fit here.”

–Ken, House of Refuge Donation Center Manager

Summers in Arizona is known for its heat. Things typically slow down as most are out of school and take vacations. However, this summer has been busier than ever with the donations continuing to roll in for our families, thanks to our generous community. Thank you to those who have donated your time to help get our team through the summer. We have been able to stay fully staffed during these hot few months.

The results were impactful.

The Donation Center not only increased the amount of donations being organized and available for our residents, but also helped our staff and volunteers establish stronger bonds with the families we serve. The Donation Center provides our residents with much more than just material necessities. Jackie, a former resident of House of Refuge, mentioned in an interview that the Donation Center was her favorite part of her and her family's experience at House of Refuge. She goes on to share that she could rely on the staff and volunteers in the center for connection and community. She knew that she could always talk to someone who “knew me and loved me and my children.” She wasn’t alone anymore. She had House of Refuge supporting her during her journey to self-sufficiency.

We couldn’t be more grateful for the support we receive. Because of you, families like Jackie’s will continue to find safety, support, and stability in our program.

Volunteer Spotlight

Jo Prahl

Teen Center

We are thrilled to honor Jo Prahl as our Volunteer of the Month! Her dedication and passion for making a difference in the lives of our community’s youth are truly inspiring. Here's what Jo shared about her journey with us:

“I spent many years teaching GED classes as a volunteer. When I moved to Arizona, I knew I wanted to ‘catch’ folks earlier in their lives to do everything I could to make certain they finish school and get a strong start in life. My community, Trilogy at Power Ranch, has long promoted residents to support House of Refuge in any way they are able.

It was natural for me to get involved at the community center and teach in the active after-school homework assistance in the pre-Covid years. I recognized in those years the teens were disinclined to hang out where the little children were. So I jumped at the chance to ask to be considered by Sean to be at the new Teen Center a year ago.

Now I cannot imagine what it would be like for me to miss out on spending time with our teens. I am old enough to be a grandmother to them. I hang out, listen to them as individuals, and talk with them about my experiences changing occupations three times during my working life. I am an example of what they are being told by the world around them. Try things and change your mind if you want to; don’t fear change and risk.

Now I know about Dungeons and Dragons. Big smiles happen when I share that I went drag racing as a young adult and met my husband there. We talk about how to get a first job and deciding what to do after high school. We have taught folks who have never tried baking ‘from scratch’ how to make cookies, and they see me putting the clean dishes away when I come in while I say hi to everyone.

When it is time to move, some young people seek me out and give me a hug. My heart is full, and I know why I never want to miss my time with them. The year they are with us is short, and I miss them when they move on.

I appreciate being allowed to share my experiences.”

Jo, your heartfelt commitment and the positive impact you have on our teens are invaluable. Thank you for your incredible support and for being such an integral part of the House of Refuge family. We look forward to many more years of your amazing contributions.

Join us in celebrating Jo and her dedication to making a difference!
