StoryWalk® at

the American Tobacco Trail:

Finding Wild

Aug. 3 - 25

From August 3-25, we are featuring the beautiful book Finding Wild written by Megan Wagner Lloyd, illustrated by Abigail Halpin. Where is wild? Sometimes you have to search for it, and other times wild is right under your nose. This book also reminds us that nature can be found in cities, if you know where to look. The gorgeous illustrations inspire us to get out and explore!

This self-guided StoryWalk® will begin near the lower picnic table at the New Hill parking area (1309 New Hill-Olive Chapel Rd.)

POTENTIAL PRESCRIBED BURN

Weather and conditions permitting, Harris Lake County Park may be conducting a controlled burn in the Longleaf Pine Restoration Area in August (Aug. 15, 16, 22, or 23 are potential days).

Some trails will be closed as we perform this necessary management. Please check our Facebook page for the latest updates.

UPCOMING MAINTENANCE WORK

During the month of August, several maintenance projects will be occurring throughout the park which will impact visitor parking and facilities. Several gravel parking lots will be graded at both Harris and the ATT, and all paved parking lots at Harris will be sealcoated and striped. Please follow us on Facebook for announcements about parking lot closures.

The Buckhorn Disc Golf Course will be closed for two weeks in August for course construction and improvements. Dates for this work are TBD. Facebook will provide the most up-to-date information.

Thank you for your patience during this time!

Nature Nook: Summer Bloomers!

Lots of beautiful native wildflowers are blooming this time of year!

Be sure to visit our Educational Garden to see Black-eyed Susans, New York Ironweed, Swamp Milkweed, Selfheal, and Hoary Mountain Mint, all of which attract pollinators. Native plants are adapted to local soils and climate and are the most beneficial nectar and pollen sources. Adult bees, butterflies, and other pollinators require nectar as their primary food source, and female bees collect pollen as food for their offspring. Incorporating native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees into any landscape promotes local biological diversity and provides shelter and food for a diversity of wildlife. Native plants can also save you time, effort, and money, because most require minimal watering once established and do well without fertilizers and pesticides.

Here are some wonderful resources for native plants in our state:

North Carolina Native Plant Society

NC State Extension

North Carolina Botanical Garden

Plant natives and watch the pollinators enjoy them - the rewards are endless!
