SUMMER FUN AT THE MOUNTAIN ARTS GALLERY!

This big group of youngsters all came in the gallery and bought duck food! I went out and called to them for a pic of them all throwing duck food over their heads on the count of 3 (a la Trevi fountain in Rome)! Which means they’ll all return someday! ~ Natalie Olson

JIM MARX - Endangered Species

The current work that I am showing in the Gallery is from a series called Endangered Species. My background in photography includes studies at Colombia College in Chicago. Part of my education included the idea of working in series. Each image works on it's own but can be stronger when in a series.

These are portraits of coin operated rides, specifically horse rides, that were often found in front of stores. Each image is a created looking for the various personalities of the individual horse. The horse itself, the colors involved, the environment are used to define the horse and to evoke an emotion from the viewer.

Aside from exploring each of the horses there is something else at work here. There is a memory of childhood involved. As an adult, the coin operated rides may evoke a memory from their childhood, maybe they have put a quarter in the slot and rode the horse for a few minutes. Even if you had never ridden one you would remember seeing them. The rides represent a time of childhood. A child of today may never have seen one of these endangered species in the wild but it would be clear from the pictures that these are toys of some sort and would be recognized as such. Not a memory of childhood in this case but an awareness of their childhood.

The colors used in each picture are not subtle, they are large areas of bold colors. Considering the simplicity of the images, the compositions are studied and sophisticated. There is texture in the pictures, the textures of the material the horses are constructed of and the textures inherent in the surrounding environment. All of these elements are brought together to both, define the subject of the image and to strike a chord in the viewer.

Children's rooms are often adorned with colorful fanciful pictures. I think it would be great to have an original piece of art given to a child. One thing that I hope for these pictures is that a child could live with one of these pictures and love it. As a child matures, the pictures can mature along with them. I hope that what can happen with these pictures is that they evoke a time of childhood but remain a real piece of art. From childhood, through the different stages of school and into advanced education into life. The pictures can move from a child's room to a college dorm all the way to homes of their own and perhaps one day end up as a piece of art in their child's room.

JAMES LONDAGIN

I have loved painting since early childhood, beginning formal painting lessons at age 11 and continuing with art classes through college. Excelling in art classes, I went on to study architecture, then earn a Bachelor’s degree in Design from the UCLA School of Fine Arts.

“Old Town Sacramento Studies 1&2”

I began my career as a restaurant designer immediately out of college where I achieved national recognition, with my work published in several hospitality design magazines. I advanced to the positions of Design Director and Creative Director for a nation-wide restaurant design firm and was recruited to establish and head a new marketing department as Marketing Director.

Through a long and curious career path I currently enjoy teaching marketing and business classes at three southern California high schools.

SONDRA JAMES

Born in Long Beach, CA. Sondra James received an Associate of Arts degree, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance and a Masters in Business Administration. Minoring in Costuming, she began working with watercolors for the costume renderings. She was always interested in Art, winning a 1st place prize in Elementary school while in Kindergarten.

Attending a pre-school of the arts, she began her career in dance attending The Royal Academy of Dance and received her teaching certification from London, England. On stage at the age of 3, she danced in 4 Ballet Companies including The Royal Ballet, The International Ballet, Ballet Gala and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Ballet. Later, she began teaching and opened The Ballet Conservatory in San Diego along with The South Bay Junior Ballet Company.

After retiring, she had more time for her art and her fundraising work. She sews Boo Boo Bears for the Hospital Auxiliary, created the Arrowhead Cookie Cutters and key Chains for the Arrowhead Arts Association and the Blue Jay window ornaments for The Women's Club Blue Jay Parade.

She finds watercolors exciting and challenging and loves oil for their rich luscious colors. She enjoys the comradery and artistic exchanges with fellow artists at the Art Gallery, making many new wonderful friends.

She has written 2 books and also enjoys swimming laps and wishes she had more time to play golf!

DARRELL HARRIS

I started woodturning in 2003 when I was invited to attend the woodturning symposium in Pasadena and have been hooked ever since!

I joined the Inland Woodturners Club and was president 2009 and 2010. I worked at Rockler Woodworking in Ontario Mills, and while there did numerous demos of woodturning, branching out to other aspects of woodworking.

The display tables that are in the Mountain Arts Gallery, I also made by hand but are not for sale. Personally, I like the challenge of studying a piece of wood, mounting it on the lathe, and creating a new piece of art. My Canvas is wood and that can be challenging, as most of the time arriving at a final shape, though occasionally that doesn't happen, so a design change does.

My favorite pieces are natural edge with the bark still attached and glued pieces are also a fun challenge for me. Always wanting to try new things, hopefully this year I will be able to do that! My shop is my sanctuary, and I'm at peace making sawdust.
