Welcome to 2024 Fall Semester at Western Nevada College!
For students who are still planning to enroll in classes this fall, Student Services is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Students can register for full-term classes until Friday, Aug. 30. After this date, students will need to complete a late registration form with instructor approval by Sept. 20.
Students have other options to take classes even though the semester has started. Open entry (through ninth week of semester), late start and short-term courses are available.

Among the upcoming activities planned for students on campus are a Welcome Back Week on Sept. 9-12, Constitution Day on Sept. 17, WNC mascot Willy’s Birthday Party on Sept. 19, an Oktoberfest celebration on Sept. 24, a Halloween celebration on Oct. 31, and more. These events are a great way to start friendships and build connections on campus!

NHSE Board of Regents to Visit WNC |
For the first time since 2019 the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents will visit Western Nevada College for its quarterly meeting at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 5 and 8 a.m. on Sept. 6 in Carson Nugget Hall. Watch the meeting at wnc.edu/notice.
Psychology Professor Dr. Rebecca Bevans will deliver a presentation on the college's forward-thinking and progressive flexible learning program early afternoon on Sept. 5 after President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe provides a campus update. Also, singing the national anthem will be none other than WNC Chief HR Officer & Chief of Staff Melody Duley, who has sung the anthem for 20-plus years. On Sept. 6, Lauren Stevens and Tyler Golden of Academic Advising & Access are scheduled to present a student success program at 9:15 a.m.

Support WNC Foundation's 25th Annual Golf for Education Tournament | Western Nevada College Foundation is reaching a milestone in presenting its Golf for Education tournament fundraiser on Friday, Sept. 27, at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley. The scramble tournament, which helps fund students for workforce training, turns 25 this year! Players can look forward to exciting contests, premium perks, a BBQ lunch and a lively post-tournament reception. | | |

Screenwriting, Astrophotography, RVing, and More Classes Offered by CE | Among other educational possibilities, WNC is about exploring and developing interests. This fall, WNC's Continuing Education program is providing a variety of these classes, including Beginning and Advanced Screenwriting, Beginning Astrophotography, Conversational Spanish, Women's Self-Defense (join until class is full), RVing 101 and 102, and more. Share Your Knowledge: Proposals for Continuing Ed Courses Due by Sept. 9 | The Continuing Education Department at Western Nevada College is seeking proposals for Community Education courses from January through June 2025, and for College for Kids courses for summer 2025. Continuing Ed is looking for folks who can help meet the needs of our community for skills and knowledge in a way that inspires learning. Continuing Ed is looking for creative ideas — maybe you can teach a Bob Ross-style watercolor class, or you have the key to surviving the zombie apocalypse, or maybe you really do know how to do underwater basket weaving. Whatever it is, if you’re ready to share it with the community, Continuing Ed wants to hear from you! Outstanding Employees Honored
at Fall 2024 Kickoff Event

Western Nevada College hosted its Fall Kickoff 2024 and Benefits and Wellness Fair on Aug. 14 to celebrate the approaching semester and to recognize outstanding employees.
WNC President, Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, honored employees for their dedication and hard work over the past year during his upbeat presentation inspiring staff with updates and plans for the coming academic year.
Honorees included Dr. Brigitte Dillet, Faculty Employee of the Year; Delia Bottoms, Classified Employee of the Year; Songhai “Song” Liu, Administrative Faculty Employee of the Year; and Disability Support Services, President's Team Award.

Child Development Center Recognized for Excellence for Seventh Straight Year | WNC's Child Development Center child care providers celebrated their seventh consecutive Best of Carson City Award with WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, Chief Advancement Officer Niki Gladys, Chief Financial Officer Coral Lopez, Chief Human Resources Officer Melody Duley and staff members on Monday, Aug. 26. Southwest Gas Donates 2020 Ford Ranger to Auto Mechanics Program | Southwest Gas donated and towed a 2020 Ford Ranger to WNC's Automotive Mechanics program located in the E.L. Cord Automotive Technology Center on the Carson City campus. The vehicle will enable students to learn more about the diagnostics and electronics for late model cars. Stacy Woodbury, Carrie Heglund and Chris Anderson of Southwest Gas attended the presentation of the vehicle to WNC President Dr. J. WNC Recognizes 99 Students on Summer Session 2024 Dean's List | Nearly 100 students earned the academic honor of making Western Nevada College’s 2024 Summer Dean’s List. To earn this achievement during the summer session, 99 students attained a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and completed six or more units of classes. | | |

Fall Semester Hours of Operation | Providing as many resources for students to succeed is what makes WNC stand out. This identity certainly applies to Joe Dini and Beck libraries. Besides providing numerous academic resources, it is open throughout the week to meet students' needs. Fall semester hours for Joe Dini Library on the Carson City campus are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Apply Now! Silver State Opportunity Grant Funds Available Until Exhausted |
Students are encouraged to take advantage of the Silver State Opportunity Grant. WNC began the summer with nearly $400,000 in funding and will award money to students until the funding is depleted. Students can receive up to $5,500 for the school year!

Pennington Foundation Career and Technical Scholarship is designed to support students pursuing careers in fields that are in high demand among local employers. College Community Mourns Passing
of Former Instructor Maria Elisa Seiler |
Regrettably, Maria Elisa Seiler, formerly Western Nevada College adjunct faculty, passed away last month in Carson City. The University of El Salvador graduate taught Biology labs, Spanish and English as a Second Language while working at WNC from 1989 through 2006. She also served as a tutor, bilingual aide and teaching assistant. Outside of the college, she was employed by Nevada Hispanic Services and Carson City Library.
“She was a valued adjunct faculty member who will be fondly remembered for her professionalism, kindness, generosity and sense of humor,” said Maxine Cirac, WNC professor of international languages. “She was always the first one to volunteer to help with a project and go the extra mile to advance the college's mission, especially regarding community outreach.”

CoolSpeak Presenter Inspires Staff, Students to Find Greatness Inside | WNC's newly renovated Marlette Hall was full of energy and life on Aug. 6. CoolSpeak presenter Laura Rizo delivered powerful and important messages to students, faculty and staff about being their authentic selves and finding greatness within. Presented by the College Readiness Education for Students in Transition (CREST) program, Rizo inspired attendees by having them sing songs containing the words hero or greatness and working in pairs to discuss experiences and personal strategies of what makes them feel better about themselves. | | |

Former WNC Standout Pitcher Inducted into McQueen Athletic Hall of Fame | Christian Stolo, who graduated from Western Nevada College with an Associate degree in 2014, was recently inducted into the McQueen High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Stolo pitched for WNC's regional championship baseball teams in 2013 and 2014 and played in the Los Angeles Dodgers minor league system after starring for the University of Nevada, Reno. | | | | | |
