Evolving Southgate Area Redevelopment Plan Approved

display board from the Evolving Southgate Area Redevelopment Plan

The Evolving Southgate Area Redevelopment Plan is a long-term guide for how the city of Maple Heights can improve and redevelop the Southgate area. The plan offers ideas for increasing the walkability and retail diversity of the 75-acre Southgate USA shopping center and surrounding areas.

Over the course of one year, County Planning engaged city leaders, residents, business owners, and other stakeholders to identify major issues and opportunities in and around Southgate USA. The plan envisions a revitalized area which becomes a unique and vibrant mixed-use district that is safe and welcoming for all residents and visitors; livable and accessible; connected to affordable and diverse housing options; with green spaces that foster an engaged community.

The plan provides practical short-term strategies—actions that could be completed in less than five years. It also provides visionary long-term strategies—actions needing further community planning and decision making, partners and collaboration, and funding and time to implement. The image above showcases the extent of the redevelopment potential envisioned with ideas for new housing, commercial, parks, and retail built along a new grid pattern of streets. The Maple Heights City Council approved the plan on July 2.

Our Communities: the 2025 Data Book Viewer is a companion tool for Our Communities: the 2025 Data Book. The Data Book, published annually, uses census and other data to provide insights into the cities, villages, and townships of Cuyahoga County. It includes information on demographics, the economy, housing, land use, transportation, and health. The Data Book can be a resource when applying for grants, understanding community changes, and identifying issues to be addressed.

The Our Communities: 2025 Data Book Viewer is an interactive map that can be used to explore key data points from the 2025 Data Book across municipalities and census tracts. The indicators shown on the map correspond to specific sections in the Data Book that provide detailed explanations, context, and methodology for those indicators.
