August is Buzzing at the Jefferson Street Farmers Market

Downtown Burlington is thriving this summer, and the Jefferson St Farmers Market continues to be the hub of activity every Thursday evening. Hosted by Downtown Partners, Inc., the market draws residents and visitors alike to enjoy the best in local produce, handmade goods, delicious food, and live entertainment.

Thanks to the generous support of Two Rivers Bank & Trust, August promises to be another exciting month at the market. Families, friends, and shoppers are invited to explore new vendors each week, enjoy vibrant performances, and take part in engaging activities for all ages, all in the heart of Downtown.

The Jefferson Street Farmers Market takes place every Thursday from 4:30 to 7:00 PM on Jefferson Street between 3rd and 6th Streets. With the street closed to vehicle traffic, it’s the perfect place to wander, shop, dine, and connect with the community.

Downtown Deets Training: Cybersecurity Essentials for Small Businesses

Downtown Partners, Inc. invites Downtown business owners and Chamber members to the next Downtown Deets professional development session, focused on one of the most pressing concerns for today’s business landscape: Cybersecurity.

Hosted by the Economic Vitality Committee, this informative session will be held on Friday, September 19 at 8:30 AM at the Greater Burlington Partnership office.

The session will be led by Todd M. Ackerman, President – Iowa Unit Leader for World Insurance Associates. With over 28 years of experience in the insurance and financial services industry, Ackerman provides strategic insight and real-world expertise in cybersecurity and risk management. He previously served as President and CEO of Two Rivers Insurance Services, where he helped grow the firm into a multi-dimensional provider of benefits, property and casualty insurance, and risk solutions for businesses and individuals.

Ackerman holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and a Master of Business Administration from Oklahoma City University, along with a Commercial Lines Coverage Specialist designation. He also serves on the Downtown Partners, Inc. Board and coaches the Burlington Notre Dame women’s high school soccer team.

Attendees will gain insight into:

• Common cybersecurity risks targeting small businesses
• Steps to protect customer data and company systems
• How to recognize phishing attempts and scams
• Best practices for staff training and password management

Piper & The Hard Times, the 2024 International Blues Challenge Band Division winner, will perform live at The Washington on August 8 at 8 PM.

Based in Nashville, this powerhouse blues and roots group is known for delivering rhythmically dynamic, high-energy performances rooted in classic blues, R&B, soul, and rock. Their sound has earned national recognition, with Nashville Scene’s Ron Wynn describing them as “one of America’s premier new blues groups,” noting their unique ability to blend the sensibility of vintage blues with the energy of modern rock.

The core of the band—Al “Piper” Green, Steve Eagon, and Dave Colella—has been writing and performing together for over 20 years. Their instrumental chemistry and captivating stage presence promise an unforgettable evening of live music in the heart of Downtown Burlington.

Library and Thyme & Spice Partner for Spicy Book Club

August 16

The Burlington Public Library, in partnership with Thyme & Spice, invites the community to join the Spicy Book Club on Saturday, August 16, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. This flavorful and fun event offers a unique opportunity to explore global cultures through food, spices, and literature.

Each gathering of the Spicy Book Club centers around a featured spice, encouraging participants to read a book connected to that spice’s geography or cultural significance. This month’s featured spice is Allspice, the dried berry of the Pimenta tree, native to the Caribbean and Central America.

Attendees will enjoy tasting allspice in a variety of foods and beverages while sharing their selected books tied to the region or its culinary traditions. It’s a vibrant way to learn, connect, and experience global cultures right here in Burlington.

Great River Bridge Race

The 29th Annual Great River Bridge Race will take place on Saturday, September 20, offering participants a unique opportunity to cross the iconic Great River Bridge on foot. Hosted in Burlington, the event features a 10K run, 5K run/walk, and a Bridge Walk, making it accessible for all ages and fitness levels.

This longstanding community tradition combines fitness, scenic views, and fun, drawing participants from across the region. Whether running for a personal best or walking for the experience, everyone is welcome to take part in this memorable event.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Burlington Parks & Recreation Department, supporting local park improvements and community programs.

Downtown Partners, Inc. Business Signage Grant Program offers applicants up to $400 in matching grant funds for perpendicular “blade” signage for their businesses!

Blade signs have several benefits:

• Accentuating the traditional historic and walkable character of Downtown Burlington
• Emphasizing the Downtown district as a collection of small, independent, locally owned businesses
• Adding to the liveliness of the streetscape
• Freeing up sidewalk space occupied by sandwich board signs
