2026 City and Region Budget Update

As your Councillor, it is always my top priority to work hard to keep tax increases to a minimum for our residents and businesses. As you know from my budget updates to the community, I have always tried my very best to do this each budget year at the City and Region. For the 2025 budget, I voted to support a motion to reduce the City infrastructure levy from 3% to 2% and brought forward several motions at the Region to try to decrease the Region and Peel Police budget. I voted against the 2025 Region budget as I could not support the proposed level of increase. In 2024, I proposed again to reduce the City infrastructure levy from 3% to 2% and voted against the 3% infrastructure levy in 2023.

Before the 2026 budget process begins, I brought forward motions at Regional Council on July 10th and City Council on July 30th to direct Staff to find 2% budget savings for each City and Region department, to lower the tax impacts for residents and businesses in 2026. I am happy to report that my 2026 budget savings motion was passed by Regional Council and Staff will report back to Regional Council on this savings request this fall.

Unfortunately, my City budget savings motion was not supported by City Council at this time and defeated in a close 6-6 vote; a tie vote fails at Council. My colleagues who voted against this motion supported Staff incorporating savings into the 2026 budget wherever possible, as is done each year, and they would prefer to bring forward specific budget reduction amendments after the budget is presented to Council. You can view the City Council discussion here. As I have done each budget year, I will continue to propose specific budget reduction amendments when the City and Region budgets are presented to Council, to try to reduce the tax impact accordingly.

I strongly encourage you to participate in the City and Region budget process and provide your comments on the budget. Budget meetings at the City and Region have been scheduled as follows:

Project ERASE: Over 2,100 Charges Laid by Peel Police

Peel Regional Police have arrested more than 130 individuals for provincial and criminal offences related to street racing and other high-risk driving behaviours, as part of Project ERASE (Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere). Between May and June 2025, officers targeted hotspot locations across the GTA, leading to the investigation of 684 vehicles and the seizure of nearly 100. More than 2,100 charges were laid, including 86 for stunt driving and 125 for unnecessary noise.

To help keep roads safe, members of the public are urged to report dangerous driving behaviours by contacting Road Safety Services at 905-453-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or by filing an online report via Road Watch. Photo and video evidence of dangerous driving incidents can also be submitted through the following evidence submission portal.

Project Bengal: Community Complaint Leads to Arrests

Officers from the 11 Division Community Incident Response Team (CIRT) have arrested and charged multiple individuals after conducting search warrants at residences in Mississauga. Project Bengal was a four-month drug and stolen property investigation led by CIRT, which originated following a community complaint reporting suspected drug trafficking activity in the Meadowvale area. The investigation revealed an organized crime group involved in both drug trafficking and targeting commercial retail businesses.

During the searches, officers seized over half a kilogram of cocaine and a variety of other illicit narcotics, along with a significant amount of stolen property and proceeds of crime. As a result, 11 individuals have been arrested and charged for offences related to drugs and stolen property.

Project Night Train

Peel Regional Police have dismantled two interconnected criminal networks linked to a series of violent home invasions and jewelry store robberies across the Greater Toronto Area, which left several victims with severe, life-altering injuries and resulted in approximately $2 million in stolen property. Project Night Train focused on 17 violent incidents that occurred between May and December 2024. As of July 22, 2025, six adults and six young persons have been arrested and charged with a total of 136 criminal offences, including attempted murder, robbery, firearms-related charges, possession of property obtained by crime, and more.

To date, investigators have recovered nearly half of the approximately $2 million in stolen property. Investigators believe additional suspects may be involved and are urging anyone with information or who may have been a victim of a similar home invasion or jewellery store robbery to contact Peel Regional Police at 905-453-3311 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.
