In The Spotlight
This month we begin a new Farm Notes feature. Every month we will introduce you to one of our dedicated volunteers. We will tell you a little bit about this person and they will have a chance to suggest something that you should see at the Farm in the coming month - it might be a plant that will be in bloom, a tree that will be spectacular or some other item of interest such as a historical or architectural feature of the Farm.
This month we begin with Linda McLaren who is a member of our Board of Directors and holds the position of Gardens Director.
Linda has been a volunteer with the Friends of the Farm since 2010 and has been on the Board of Directors since 2023. She is retired after a career at Corrections Canada and is one of those people who now says "I don't know how I had time to work." In addition to her work with The Friends, she also sits on the Board of Directors for the Parkway House and is a member of the Workers' History Museum Fundraising Committee.
Linda suggests that you visit the Ornamental Gardens in August, specifically the Perennial Gardens. While some of the early bloomers have finished their show for the season, Linda has chosen to highlight Rudbeckia, AKA, Black-eyed Susans.
This native garden classic is a late season star which fills the garden with rich vibrant colour that attracts the eye from afar. The variety Rudbeckia Fulgida is found in the perennial beds along with a several shorter lived cultivars that often self sow.
Come for a visit in August and see for yourself why Linda loves Rudbeckia!
