Supplies can be dropped in the box located in Devan's outer office or you can bring donations to the Monday night dinners.

Types of things needed include: backpacks, #2 pencils, 24-crayon boxes, wide-ruled composition books, 1" notebooks, 2-pocket folders, 3-ring binders, zippered pencil pouches or boxes, rulers, erasers, glue sticks, highlighters, etc. New socks are also always needed and welcomed!

Teachers also have a strong need for supplies. They are given just $100 a year for supplies, with the rest coming out of their own pockets. They need paper products such as Kleenex, paper towels, sanitary wipes and plastic bags all sizes.

POA Update On Our Roads

Last year after Hurricane Helene hit our area we had many challenges including clearing and repairing our roads. We would like to again thank all the residents who personally cut and cleared trees and debris from the roads. Also, during the past winter our snow removal contractor had damaged equipment from the hurricane and could not adequately perform snow removal. We hired another contractor to perform the remaining snow removal work for winter 2024 and plan to use this new vendor for the upcoming year.

We had planned to do some additional patching on the roads last year but the hurricane forced us to stop. Since then our efforts have been focused on cleaning debris and trees from the roads and right-of-ways, reinstalling damaged reflector posts, and repairing guard rails. We plan to have most of this work completed by early August.

We requested help from FEMA to remove trees from our roads. Initially they would not commit to work on private property and on private roads in subdivisions. However, they later changed their position and removed some trees and debris in several areas. Note that we did not have any control over the work done by FEMA or where they would work. However, it was a big help to our efforts. Unfortunately, the equipment used by FEMA and other contractors has caused some damage to our roads.

To help us with needed road repair we contacted NC Emergency Services. It is very important that residents in areas with road damage, particularly on some parts of Hemlock and Balsam, also contact NC Emergency Services at ncemprb@ncdps.gov or 844-746-2326 to file a request to repair the damage to the road near their property. NC Emergency Services indicated they will primarily only respond to individual homeowner requests and not to organizations that represent the homeowners.

We have also obtained some new bids to patch and seal our roads but we cannot begin this work until all remaining debris along the sides of the roads has been removed. It has been very difficult to get qualified bids on the work needed because most of the contractors are too busy to give us bids or do the work. We are hopeful that we will be able to do the planned patching later this year.

During the snow season last year some residents suggested that we mark some of the roads with reflectors to clearly show where the side edges are to support safer driving. We will temporarily install some reflectors in December this year and remove them after the snow season. We plan to continue this process yearly. We are also investigating updating our road signs and will plan to focus on that once our higher priority road projects are completed.

Lastly, the Road Committee is working on a longer-term road plan for another chip and seal or complete asphalt re-surface. The last chip and seal paving was partially successful, but the contractor did not meet our expectations. We learned from that experience and will incorporate those lessons learned as we develop our long-term plan. We will provide an update on our due diligence progress and estimated costs for the options at our annual meeting on September 18th.

Dinner in the Mountains August 18th

Don't miss our second-to-last Monday night dinner. We are so blessed to be able to enjoy our neighbors and friends and get a night off from cooking just steps from home. Daniel Boone Inn will be catering fried chicken, country style ham & biscuits, coleslaw, green beans, and strawberry shortcake. Hosts for the evening are Deb & Julian Bunn. BYOB $20 per person. (RSVP deadline is noon, Thursday, August 14th.)

Labor Day Cookout

Sign up to bring potluck salads, sides, and desserts. Host for the night is Adele Carter $10 per person. As usual, BYOB. (RSVP deadline is noon, August 28th.)

2025 Junior Golf Camps

Robert Nowack reports, "We hosted two sessions of junior golfers. A morning wave consisting of kids through the YMCA and an afternoon wave made up of members and other kids that were involved in our spring First Tee program. All in all, we had 48 juniors attend our camps this past week.

Thanks to our partnership with First Tee, we were able to not only work on golf skills, but also integrate life skills like sportsmanship, teamwork, and goal-setting, to name a few. To pull this off, we had the help of nine First Tee interns from HBCU schools who helped teach the kids. They even got to participate in a week-ending Parent/Child Tournament.

A big thank you to the membership for sharing the course and the practice facilities. We are excited about the future of golf! If you have a junior that is interested in taking up the game, we will be having a new series of clinics starting August 21 - October 2. For more information, contact Robert.

A little about First Tee: First Tee began in 1997 as a partnership among the LPGA, the Masters Tournament, the PGA of America, the PGA TOUR, and the USGA to make golf affordable and accessible for all kids. As First Tee introduced the game, they also introduced a life skills curriculum that supported the development of values found within the game of golf, including honesty, integrity, perseverance and respect.

Life is Uncertain...

...eat dessert first! At our Classic Rock potluck, I couldn't help snapping this dessert photo. What caught my eye about this (and several other desserts like it), was that this was taken BEFORE dinner during the Mix & Mingle. That must have been some good pie! 😂😂😂

Save the Date!

Mark you calendar now and save the date. For our many year-round residents and others who may be visiting around the holiday season, the annual Mountain Glen Holiday Potluck is scheduled for Monday, December 8, 2025 at 6PM.
