SOMERS LIBRARY NEWSLETTER

AUGUST 2025

Director's Corner

We're halfway through the year, already?

I can hardly believe August is here! As I reflect on the past seven months, one thing is clear—Somers Library has been bustling with activity, and the staff has been working incredibly hard to make it all happen. From hosting the wide range of programs for all ages to enhancing our collections and improving our seating areas for your comfort, we've been busy behind the scenes.

As mentioned in our last newsletter, I hope that you've had a chance to join our Summer Reading Program. It’s not too late to get started! It’s easy to join, and all you have to do is read, and you’ll have a chance to win fun prizes. We have something for everyone, from our youngest book lovers to adults. Stop by your department (Children’s, Teen, or Adult) to find out more information.

Believe it or not, our staff is already hard at work planning a lineup of fall and winter events—including the return of the annual Book Sale (details to be announced soon!). With that being said, patrons may see a slight decrease of programming at the end of the summer into the beginning of September. This gives our staff a chance to catch up, recharge, and regroup for the fall season and to work on collection development as well as other projects.

Just a reminder: Somers Library is so much more than a place to borrow books. It’s a true community hub—a space to connect, to learn, to unwind, and to grow. Whether you're studying, working remotely, relaxing after a trip to the park and picking out bedtime reads, learning mah jong, or making a snack with our Children's and Teen librarians, there's something here for everyone.

How lucky are we to be nestled in beautiful Reis Park? It’s truly the perfect place to spend the day with family or friends—and we love being part of it. Somers Library is proud to be at the heart of this vibrant community, and even prouder to serve you. I can’t wait to see what the rest of 2025 has in store for all of us!

Kind regards,

Jessica Veissy, Library Director

P.S. Got a friend, neighbor, or family member without a library card? Today’s the perfect day to change that—it’s the smartest (and most fun!) card they’ll ever own!

Do You Suffer from FOMOSR?

(Fear Of Missing Out on Summer Reading)

FOMOSR—that nagging feeling when you spot a kid skipping out of the library with a towering stack of books and think, “Why don’t I get prizes for reading?”

It’s real. It’s sneaky. And it strikes more adults than you’d think.

Wondering if you have it? The symptoms are easy to spot:

  • A wave of nostalgia every time you see a Summer Reading log.
  • Longing to break out of your usual reading rut.
  • An irresistible urge to escape somewhere new—through the pages of a great story.
  • Mild envy of the prizes, stickers, and shiny bookmarks being handed out to the under-18 crowd.
  • A sudden interest in attending fun, engaging library events… designed just for grown-ups.

Sound familiar? Good news: there’s a cure.

Join the Adult Summer Reading Challenge at Somers Library!

It’s free, it’s easy, and every adult participant is entered to win fabulous raffle prizes — like a membership to the NY Botanical Gardens or The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Because summer reading isn’t just for kids.

Read. Relax. Win stuff.

From The Children's Library

We’ve been having a busy summer here in the Children’s Room!

Kids are logging their reading and getting prizes through our summer reading game, and Book Buddies are meeting here at the library as older children help younger ones improve their reading skills.

We have some exciting guests coming to present programs to mark this last month of the summer. Highlights among these this month include John Gallagher presenting his Honeybees and Pollinators program, and the Westchester Children’s Museum coming to present two different STEAM programs, as part of their River North Education Initiative. On August 13th they will be presenting Art to Animation with two sessions for grades K-2 and 3-5, and on August 25th they will be presenting Light and Sound with three sessions for K-2, 3-5 and a special morning session for PreK. It’s not to be missed!
