Have questions about plants or gardening? On Wednesday, September 3rd and Wednesday, September 17th, a Master Gardener will be available from 10 AM-12 PM at the Rockwall County Master Gardener table on the first floor next to the stairs to answer all things gardening! No registration required.

Our Night Owl Knitters is a must-attend for anyone who loves knitting, crochet, and conversation! The program takes place upstairs in the Women's League Conference Room on Thursdays from 6-7:30 PM. All skill levels welcome and starting supplies can be provided.

Calling all independent readers who love books *and* doggies!! Make your appointment to read to special guests — therapy dogs — during this fun independent reading activity. Therapy dogs will be available for fifteen-minute time slots on Saturday, September 6th and Saturday, September 13th from 10:30-11:30 AM. Put your dancing shoes on! Ann and Ernie Ellis are coming to the library to teach line dancing on Saturday, 6th from 1-3 PM. Are you a teen, 12-16, looking to discuss great books with other teens? Then join us on Saturday, September 6th, from 2:30-3:30 PM for our first-ever Teen Talk Book Club! We'll gather as a group to listen to the first several chapters of Jenny Han's beloved novel The Summer I Turned Pretty. Then, we'll discuss our thoughts, theories, and finish off our book conversations with cookies! Register at the Youth Desk or by calling 972-204-7740.

Join us on Wednesday, September 10th at 4:45 PM for a Beginner Ballet Class with Ivana Yan and Tang Deng! This class is for children ages 4-6. The class will include:

·Introduction to basic ballet positions and movements

·Fun warm-ups and stretching

·Simple across-the-floor exercises

·A focus on having fun!



Parents will be asked to wait outside the room while the class is in progress. Students should wear stretchy clothes or a leotard with skirt and socks or ballet shoes (Ballet clothing not required)! Baby Bounce (Infants to 12 months)

A structured interactive time for babies and their parents or caregivers. Lots of rhymes, music, and touch. Continuous adult participation is required.

Walking Ones (ages 12-24 months)

Fridays at 10:05 AM and 11:05 AM

Music, sensory activities, and short books followed by a social time for the adults and children. Continuous adult participation is required.

Terrific Twos (ages 2-3)

Mondays & Wednesdays 10:15 AM

Stories, songs, and fun for ages 24 months and up. Parents/caregivers are required to attend and encouraged to participate.

Preschool Time (ages 3-6)

Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays 11:15 AM

For children ages 3-6, a 30-minute program of stories, songs, rhymes, and some silliness. 

Welcome back explorers! Join us in the Large Meeting Room on Monday, September 15th at 4:30 PM to explore ancient China. Let’s follow Jack and Annie, from the Magic Tree House series, as they visit ancient China and come face-to-face with the Dragon King. We will explore the history of ancient China and do crafts. Snack provided. Strictly ages 7+. 

Looking for ways to enjoy healthier meals? Then join us for our Cooking Well for Healthy Blood Pressure classes! This series will offer practical tools, recipes, and lifestyle tips to help manage or prevent high blood pressure through healthy eating. Each program will run from 6-7:30 PM and meet in the Large Meeting Room. Presented by Aimee Sandifeer, Ed.D., Rockwall County Extension Agent – Family & Community Health.

Do you have gently used puzzles you are done enjoying? Bring them to the library on Saturday, September 20th anytime between 10 AM to 2 PM and exchange them for new (to you) puzzles! Bring a puzzle, take a puzzle. Bring seven puzzles, take seven puzzles! Puzzles should be complete and in good condition. All ages welcome! ⁠

Let’s play chess! Join our student chess players for a friendly game on Monday, September 22nd from 4:45-5:45 PM. All ages and skill levels welcome. Program will meet in the Storytime Room.

Fall is right around the corner and with that comes camping season. And what scrumptious treat is a must during camping? S'MORES!

Join us on Tuesday, September 23^rd from 4:15-5:15 PM in the Large Meeting Room as we delve into the science of s'mores! What is the melting point of a marshmallow and of chocolate? We are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a performance by the Dobbs Elementary Folklorico group! Join us as we enjoy traditional Mexican folk dancing , lively music, and beautiful, colorful costumes brought to us by students and teachers from Rockwall ISD! Performance will take place on Thursday, September 25th from 6-7 PM in the Large Meeting Room. 

Are you interested in home educating your child(ren)? Do you need some additional support? This seminar provides direction & information for those who are interested, just begun, or looking for new ideas. Families with children from K-12^th grade will learn about the requirements & laws in Texas, especially transitioning into high school. We discuss time management, learning challenges, curriculum choices, support services, extra-curricular activities, & the lifestyle of a homeschooling family. Rockwall County Library, in association with Rockwall County 4H families, invite you to read with a rabbit on Saturday, September 27th! Bunny reading companions will be at the library from 2:30-3:30 PM to listen to a story read by an independent reader. As an independent reading activity, participants will have their reading session in the Storytime Room without their parent/caregiver and younger siblings. This is a program intended to provide a positive reading environment and motivation for emergent and reluctant readers. Registration Required. Join us on Monday, September 29th at 4:30 PM for our next LEGO build Challenge! The LEGO Challenge for September is to build a robot. What kind of features will your robot have? Will it have motors and wheels? Clamps and grippers? What tasks do you want it to perform?

Build your own design or join with others at your table and build together. All supplies provided; program is best suited for ages 6+.

Letter from the Editor: Great Reads Featuring Libraries!

In honor of September being National Library Card Sign-Up Month, we decided to highlight Adult Fiction titles that feature...LIBRARIES!

Since there truly are so many exceptional books that feature librarians and libraries, narrowing it down to a handful was no easy task, but here are some of our favorites:

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

In the midst of the Great Depression of the 1930s, many of the impoverished people living in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky did not have regular access to newspapers, magazines, or books...until the Pack Horse Library Project and the "Book women" intervened.

Nineteen-year-old Cussy Carter is one of these traveling librarians. Born with blue skin due to congenital methemoglobinemia, Cussy faces an enormous number of challenges in her life due to prejudices and fear from others around her. Despite it, she manages to remain unwavering in her goal to bring the gift of literacy to those in desperate want of it and forges her own special bonds of love and connection with the patrons she serves.

The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth

Twins Rose and Fern are very, very different but still extremely close, bonded both by their deep love for each other and a tragic childhood secret. But despite their painful past, they've been able to move on with their lives, with Rose having settled into married life and her career as an interior designer and Fern thriving in her calling as a librarian. Things are safe and secure, not at all like how they were all those years ago.

But when Rose's happiness is at stake due to her inability to achieve the thing that she wants more than anything else in the world, Fern decides that she'll do whatever it takes to make her sister's dreams come true. After all, Rose has always looked out for her, especially when it came to the biggest mistake of Fern's life. Except when she starts to develop a relationship with an endearingly eccentric library patron, everything in her life—including how well she truly knows her twin—is thrown into question.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Nora's existence is empty, filled only with sadness and regret. Pushed to the limit by an unbearable loss, she ends up in a place between life and death—the Midnight Library. There, she finds magical books that guide her to all the possible different lives she could have lived, had she made different choices. Who wouldn't take the opportunity to tread down the paths not taken?

Guided by her former school librarian and these books, Nora is able to live out a series of both extraordinary and ordinary other possibilities. But she soon learns that with every different life, every different choice, there still comes pain, trials, and tribulations.

The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray

It's 1905 in New York, and Belle da Costa Greene is a sharp and witty visionary with an excellent eye for art and literature. Despite her relatively young age, she has been hired by the extraordinarily wealthy J. P. Morgan to be his personal librarian. Using the skills she has developed, she'll be the one to curate an incredible collection of rare manuscripts, books, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library. But Belle has an enormous secret, one that threatens not only her livelihood but her very life if discovered—she is a Black woman passing for white.

Before long, Belle has become deeply immersed into New York society and become acquainted with some of the most powerful and influential people in the world of art and literature. Her intelligence, talent, and drive have taken her to incredible heights, ones she could have never reached if she were truthful about her identity in an incredibly racist and discriminatory society. But the constant tension that comes with denying who she is and being all too aware of what she stands to lose if discovered, hangs heavily over her.

The Book-a-Librarian service is an opportunity for patrons with Rockwall County Library cards (in good standing) to receive individual, focused assistance from a professional librarian in a scheduled 30-minute appointment. Assistance with computer skills, reading suggestions, downloading e-books and e-audiobooks, and resume building are just a few examples of how we can help. Please fill out the form completely, and a librarian will contact you to schedule an appointment. Appointments are limited to two sessions per month per person.

Let’s learn about the State Fair of Texas! Since its establishment in 1886, the State Fair of Texas has promoted Texas agriculture, education, and community involvement through quality entertainment. Enjoy a fun presentation and activities based on the State Fair! Program will take place on Wednesday, October 1st from 4:30-5:30 PM in the Storytime Room and Large Meeting Room. Recommended for ages 6+. 

The Rockwall Art League joins us on Thursday, October 2nd from 5:30-7:30 PM for a zentangle art class! Zentangle combines simple drawing techniques with meditative, relaxing therapy. The basic principle is for one to relax and engage in a practice using easy-to-master strokes, known as tangles, to make a beautiful piece of artwork. Program will be in the Storytime Room. Register at the Adult Reference Desk or by calling 972-204-7770. For ages 18+ only.
