Showing Up
There are days when community work can feel like a long list of things still waiting to happen. Then there are days when Fondren reminds you exactly why the work is worth doing.
A few days ago, we put out a call for volunteers for Symphony at Sunset. Within 24 hours, 20 people had raised their hands, twice the number we needed. No arm-twisting. No weeks of follow-up. Just people saying, in effect, “Tell me where to be.” That response says something important about Fondren. Our strength is not only in our restaurants, shops, institutions, historic buildings or major projects. It is in the people who choose to show up for one another and for the neighborhood.
Showing up can look like taking a volunteer shift, sponsoring a table, sharing an event post, or attending a meeting. It can mean introducing two organizations that ought to know each other, offering an idea, answering a question, or simply being present when a neighbor opens a new door. None of those acts alone makes a district. Together, they do.
We have seen that spirit throughout August. A new Fondren website is giving residents, businesses and visitors a clearer front door to the district. Partners are beginning a deeper conversation about how Fondren tells its story. At St. Andrew’s, we celebrated another investment that chose to bring its dream to life in Fondren.
The Fondren Renaissance Foundation’s job is often to connect the dots, to bring people into the same conversation, help good ideas move forward, and keep attention on the work that strengthens this district. But connections only matter when people are willing to act on them.
So this month, my message is simple: thank you for showing up. Thank you to the volunteers, sponsors, business owners, residents, board members, institutional partners, and friends who keep choosing Fondren.
And if you are wondering where to show up next, we have a pretty good answer: Thursday, September 24, at The Cedars for Symphony at Sunset. Bring a chair, bring a friend, and come enjoy one of the nights that reminds us what community can sound like.
