Dog Days of Summer are Upon Us!
Historically, the federal government has played an important role in ensuring that our elections are safe, secure, accurate and providing critical support to states to protect elections from outside threats. Today, however, the federal government is staffed at the highest levels by individuals with a history of supporting false and discredited conspiracy theories about our elections. These officials are enabling an agenda that seeks to take the power to control election outcomes out of the hands of everyday voters.
Trump is a conman and he will say anything, loudly, to scare people, to make them think the elections will be rigged, to make people stay home because of some threat.
Despite the chaos President Trump and his allies are attempting to create, one thing remains clear: No president has the power to cancel or postpone federal elections, nor can the president abuse emergency powers to override the will of the voters. The Constitution places election authority squarely with the states Congress, and Election Day is set by federal law.
Our democracy is under threat but attempts to subvert our elections will not be successful. Many organizations are fighting against Trump and his lapdogs and stand ready to defend against the numerous challenges facing our democracy. They have and will use many tools at their disposal to ensure that our nation’s strong track record of conducting accessible, safe, secure and accurate elections continues during the 2026 General Election.
Our Texas Democratic Party is aware of these threats and is building a Voter Protection Plan with these goals:
1.Strengthen our legal team to be ready to pounce on any voter suppression attempt made between now and Election Day. This allows us to be proactive and not just wait for voter suppression to happen. We are actively using every tool we have to legally strengthen the right to vote and make it harder for the GOP to cheat.
2.Build a MASSIVE volunteer poll watchers and poll observers training program led by legal guidance and experts. This ensures that everyone who is assigned to voter protection efforts on Election Day will be ready to navigate challenges and respond quickly.
3.Build the internal response center that will be ready to assist and report to the Secretary of State any shady practices or illegal suppression happening on the ground. Making sure no Texan faces barriers when they show up to cast their ballot takes time, planning, and funding.
It can’t wait for the fall. It needs to happen now with all that is at stake. This is extremely important in this election because Democrats have a chance to win!
Democracy requires constant care and vigilance on the part of all Americans, especially when it is under great strain. So, we must not be afraid. We have one great right under our Constitution – the right to vote. State and local officials know voters’ rights and are there to protect and administrate those rights. They’re proud and strong in that duty that every voter has a voice and has the ability to make that voice heard.
The challenges ahead are real, but they are not insurmountable. The future of our elections depends on the actions YOU/we take today.
