Two rainbow crossings in July left us with heavy hearts. We lost two beautiful seniors, Mabel and Forrest.

Mabel came to us from an overcrowded shelter after a caring supporter reached out when she realized Mabel was on the kill list. We were able to get her to the sanctuary quickly, and the rest is history. She was a true joy and immediately became a star with our volunteers. Outings showcased her fantastic personality as playground slides were her favorite, as was saying hello to everyone she passed. However, it was with Jeff, our amazing staff member, that Mabel found home.

Jeff always wanted a rottie, and Mabel was drawn to him. Jeff fosters many of our dogs in order to give them a taste of home, and he scooped up Mabel without a second thought. She had never received any applications or interest, but Jeff knew she was meant to be his. Over the last year, she became part of his pack and never looked back. Her illness came swiftly, and she didn't suffer at the end. Jeff gave her the home she deserved with unconditional love and care. It's often said that angels walk among us. Jeff was Mabel's angel.

Forrest was all beagle, and we were here for it. This precious old pup didn't let his age define him. In his time at SDS, he delivered food, debuted in The Nutcracker, attended adoption events, went on outings, and found the love of a foster family. His fosters raved about him and loved him immensely. His second chance came from them, and he was forever changed by their love and devotion.

This sweet beagle was recently diagnosed with kidney failure. There is just never enough time with these precious dogs that capture our hearts. His fosters looked after him, and when the suffering started, he went for one last walk around the sanctuary grounds. He lay down by our Memorial Garden and leaped across the rainbow bridge surrounded by those who had gone before him.

Rest easy, Mabel and Forrest. The glorious imprints you left on our hearts will guide us through the pain of your loss.
