Beyond the Dais

Hello,

When most people think of public meetings, they picture council chambers: the gavel, the dais and the three-minute timer ticking down. But as election season heats up, relying solely on formal council meetings to gauge resident sentiment is like reading a single staff report and assuming you’ve captured the entire story of your city. You miss the broader context.

The real magic of community feedback often happens far beyond those council doors. It happens when city leaders step out from behind the dais and meet residents on their own turf — town halls at the high school gymnasium, workshops at the community center or a spot presentation at the local Rotary Club meeting.

Especially during an election year, residents want to feel heard, not talked at. Taking the show on the road lowers the barrier to entry. While public comment at the podium in council chambers can sometimes feel like performance art for the loudest voices in town, neighborhood pop-ups or lunches with local civic organizations can invite the “quiet middle” into the conversation. Busy parents, local business owners and commuting workers are far more likely to share constructive feedback at a farmer’s market booth than at a 6 p.m. council meeting.

That exact breakthrough played out in a client city, where a member of our team recently facilitated a workshop regarding the redesign of an intersection that serves as a central gateway into the city. Staff proposed roundabouts and expected a standard debate over technical specifications. Fifty-two members of the public expressed their hesitation. Because they gathered to listen to one another and work through concerns together, the community reached a major breakthrough: a shared consensus to prioritize pedestrian and bicyclist safety.

Don't wait for your residents to come to the microphone. Go where they already gather, take a seat and let them know their local government is showing up for them.

Out in the Community,
