Weekend Lineup
Boogie. Fling. Picnic.
Boogie Back to Bastrop
The 5th Annual Boogie Back to Bastrop Western Swing Festival is set for Fri. and Sat., Aug. 23 and 24. Each year, the City of Bastrop Convention & Exhibit Center hosts this 2-day cultural event, celebrating and preserving Texas Country & Western Swing music and dance. Dance lovers from across the state (and beyond) travel to Bastrop annually to enjoy the sounds of authentic, live Texas music. This year's music lineup features Jeff Woolsey & The Dancehall Kings, Rocky King Band, Frank Cavitt & The Honky Tonk Doctors, the Nathan Colt Young Band, Glen Collins & The Alibis, and David Lewis with the Honky Tonk Doctors .
Hosted inside the beautiful Bastrop Convention & Exhibit Center, dance goers will enjoy spinning around the new, 1,600 square-foot wooden dance floor, while keeping cool inside the spacious, air-conditioned facility. On site food and alcohol concessions will be available, and retail/craft vendors will also be on-hand offering specialty goods for dancers to purchase.  You won't want to miss this amazing swing weekend and all the charm Bastrop, Texas has to offer!

Summer Fling in Houston
Two words: air conditioned. Okay maybe it's a hyphenated word, but point is, get out of the heat and into the cool KC Hall #2917 on Whitney St. for the annual Summer Fling on Sat., Aug. 24. It's a great deal! Advance tickets are $100 and that gets you admission for two to dinner, dance, and raffle, with $13,000 given away in 23 Visa gift cards in varying denominations. Only 350 raffle tickets will be sold. Don't worry if you don't get advance tickets! Dinner and dance tickets will be sold at the door. Plus, they always have a fun "refreshment baskets" raffle you can enter as well. Doors open at 4 pm, dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, and the dance, with music by Red Ravens, is from 7-11 pm.

Church Picnic Alert
St. Mary's Parish will be having its 69th Annual Bazaar and Feast on Sun., Aug. 25 at the Ellinger Chamber of Commerce Community Center. The day will begin with Mass at 8 am at St. Mary's Catholic Church located 2 miles east of Ellinger off FM 2503. Beginning at 11 am a delicious fried chicken and sausage dinner with all the trimmings will be served. The Holub Polka Band will provide music from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Other entertainment throughout the day includes a raffle featuring 26 prizes with the top prize being a $5,000 VISA Gift Card. Bye-Bye Dog Days! Polka On!

Coming in September: Happy 5th anniversary to Theresa Parker and Gary McKee. Yes, they have been publishing the Texas Polka News for 5 years! Theresa and Gary reflect on this accomplishment. This issue has lots of photos and recaps the polka ride over the past 5 years. Gary also gives a thumbs up to dancers in training - those young kids having fun on the dance floor. Justin Everett reviews an oldie but a goodie CD by the Red Ravens and profiles DJ Heidi from Denton. He also helps us remember Rosie Mikula who recently passed away. Of course, we have your September calendar of dances, festivals, and live music events, and the listing of church picnics. Visit texaspolkanews.com to see the latest issue.

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to   join a fitness club and start exercising.
I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors.
I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour.  But,   by the time I got my leotards on,  the class was over.
