It's the most wonderful time of the year... Loon Day, that is! We'll be closed on Loon Day itself, but we have some other fun August events that you don't want to miss.

Used Book Sale - Friday, August 5th

The annual Friends of the Mercer Library USED BOOK SALE will be this Friday, August 5th from 9am to 2pm. We'll have bargains for everyone with books, DVDs, children's books, puzzles, and more. After noon, take advantage of "bag sale" pricing for even more deals. 

We are still accepting donations for the sale. Click here to read more about the sale and what we will accept.  Bring your donations to the library on Thursday, August 4th from 9am to 7pm.

Friday, August 5 at 1pm - Roger Hinterthuer presents his true crime tale, Justice Delayed is Justice Denied 

Friday, August 12 at 1pm - Author Enid Cleaves and investigator Craig Nehring present their book, Wisconsin's Most Haunted, detailing some of the stories from the Fox Valley Ghost Hunters
Is freelance writing a career for you? 

Interested in making writing a career? Writer Ardis Berghoff presents "Freelance Writing for Business" on Monday, August 8 at 6:30pm. For more than 20 years, she has written for a variety of companies, marketing firms and non-profits as a freelancer -- whether from her home in the Chicago area or her cabin on a lake in Winchester. 
Upcoming kids and family events

The Lake Superior Zoomobile makes a visit to Mercer on Thursday, August 11th for shows at 11:00 a.m. (best for kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade) and 12:00 noon (best for kids in grades 3 through 5). They'll bring along a few program critters to give you up-close animal interactions.

Kids are invited to Build a Birdhouse on Thursday, August 18th at 11:00 a.m. We'll provide the materials and tools, along with help to build your own real birdhouse.

Fe University fall sessions

Fe University is an Iron County program that gives older adults a chance to keep their minds active by providing college-level courses for seniors. Their fall sessions will get underway soon, and topics include the ecology of the Northland Highlands lakes, genetics and evolution, and an insider's view of the NFL. Check it out!

Northwoods Book Festival 

The Mercer Library is proud to be a sponsor of the 2016 Northwoods Book Festival. 
  • This month we kick off the discussion groups for our COMMUNITY READ of Nickolas Butler's Shotgun Lovesongs. Borrow a copy of the book at any of our six participating libraries. 
  • The Minocqua Public Library will host authors Ron Legro and Avi Lank to talk about their book, The Man Who Painted the Universe, on August 11. 
  • Local author and naturalist John Bates will speak at the Koller Library in Manitowish Waters on August 18th about his upcoming book on old growth forests and about how to preserve and protect old-growth in our state. 
All Northwoods Book Festival events are free and open to all, thanks to generous sponsorship from the Wisconsin Humanities Council and the Walmart Community Foundation.
