“Drumming!”
“Dancing!”
“Jumping rope”
“Making tie-dye t-shirts!”
“Free time!”
These responses, all accompanied by big smiles, were campers’ answers to the question “What’s your favorite part of Drumming Camp?” Last week we celebrated our 10th Anniversary of Drumming Camp and hosted 16 children ages 6-13 for five fun-filled days of arts, crafts, snacks, dinners, desserts, and most importantly African drumming and dancing instruction.
The theme of this year’s camp, “Our hearts beat the same,” came from the children’s book I Am You—a book about Ubuntu, by Refiloe Moahloli. The Rev. Karen Eberhardt read the book to the children and led them in discussions of ubuntu—the belief from southern African countries that we are all connected.
Drumming Camp was established in 2013 in partnership with the Diocese of Newark Prison Ministry, which advocates for restorative justice, interfaith programs, and personal healing for prisoners, their families, and communities.
On the last day of camp, the children lead by master drummer Yah' ya Kamate performed for family and friends on our front lawn. Then we talked, laughed, and ate together. It was truly a beautiful day!
| |
Each of our campers left with a huge smile, a backpack filled with school supplies, snacks, veggies from our Good News Garden, photos and a drumming camp certificate. | |
A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR VILLAGE!
THANK YOU, one and all, for helping to make Drumming Camp 2022
a tremendous success. It takes a village and we are truly grateful for each of you!

CHRISTINE'S KITCHEN HOSTING
Saturday, September 10th
It is time again to prepare for our final Christine's Kitchen hosting for 2022! Full service at the kitchen is still on hold, so it remains "lunch to go".
Our target is 150 bagged lunches. If 10 of us can each give 15 lunches each (see guidelines below), we can make the 150 that is the current ask from the soup kitchen director. The reason for the increased amount is now they have expanded the program to a home delivery program for the folks who are shut in or those with underlying health issues who don’t want to risk exposure to covid by standing in line.
Flexibility: No need to commit to all items below if for instance you can only do drinks and not sandwiches, we can fill in the gaps and take care of the bagging too if needed.
Please reach out to Deryck Rugbeer at 201-452-9068, or turkeyen@gmail.com if you would like to provide lunches.
Our next hosting event will be in Spring 2023.
+++
SOUP KITCHEN GUIDELINES FOR LUNCHES TO GO
Sandwich lunches to go
- In each lunch, there should be at least a sandwich, a fruit, a snack, a dessert, and a drink.
- There should be at least three types of sandwiches (e.g. roast beef, turkey, ham, Italian, corned beef, tuna, chicken salad, salami – you decide).
- Label each bag with the type of sandwich. Group the sandwiches by type.
- Include plasticware (fork, spoon, napkin) in each lunch, even if your menu doesn’t require utensils.
- Lunches can be dropped off at Deryck's home before 10:30am on September 10th, or the night before.
Monetary Donations
Monetary donations are gratefully accepted. Make checks out to Holy Trinity Church or donate online on our website: http://www.holytrinitywo.org/. General Fund (unrestricted) gifts are the most powerful, since they can be used where the need is greatest.
P.S. Mama Dag’s Seafood & Pizza Restaurant (formerly Patsy’s) has been providing Christine’s Kitchen with generous and frequent donations. Please consider patronizing this restaurant if your family chooses to eat out or buy take-out. https://mamadags.com/
