Thursday, August 27, 1 - 2 p.m.

A recent study by OECD found that student career aspirations have not changed much in the last 20 years, despite dynamic changes that have shrunk some industries while growing new ones. Students from low-income families are more likely to have a limited view of future career options. The risk of job loss due to automation means students need exposure to a broader array of careers — especially ones that lead to greater economic security — and the education needed to earn these more resilient roles. Career guidance helps students see the relationship between their future and the education needed to get there that can help keep them on track.

Communities are taking matters into their own hands, bringing together employers, students and education institutions to help students better understand careers available in their community that are in high demand and the education options that will help them prepare.  Ian Fletcher, Vice President of Education and Talent with the Greater Gainesville Chamber, and Chris Laney, Workforce Education Director with CareerSource Suncoast, will share how their communities are connecting careers and education options with students so they can make more informed choices.

MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENT
Bread of the Mighty has moved over 12M lbs. of food in 5 months

Since March 1, the Bread of the Mighty Food Bank staff, 190+ Agency Partners and volunteers have been working tirelessly to meet the growing needs for food due to COVID-19. Last year the organization had a record year distributing over 8.4 million pounds of food to those in need. This year since March 1 Bread of the Mighty has distributed over 12 million pounds of food in just 5 months. That is 10 million meals! Hunger is real and COVID-19 has created so much more need. Bread of the Mighty gets the food out to where the people that need it can get it.

The food bank is so grateful for the support this community has shown during these challenging times. Every dollar received provides 10 meals. $0.96 of every dollar goes to the community. As food donations are down due to COVID-19 and people are staying at home, the monetary donations are helping Bread of the Mighty secure the food supply needed to feed the community. Bread of the Mighty continues to provide nourishment with meat, dairy and produce along with the non-perishables. As always our trucks pick up donated food with 100 stops each week at area Publix, Winn-Dixie, Hitchcock’s, Grocery Depot, Walmart, Aldi, Sam’s, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Save-A-Lot, Uppercrust, PFG, Florida Food Service and Earth Origins. Each of these businesses in the five counties we serve are helping Bread of the Mighty provide food and hope to the communities we serve.

Bread of the Mighty's mission is to provide food, hope and encouragement to those in need. The organization still holds out hope that someday we may celebrate together at Empty Bowls 2020. The sold out postponed event raised over $87,000 and donations still come in for it.

If you or your business want to donate, visit breadofthemighty.org, or host a food drive. Volunteers are welcome.
