Global Mission Team Helping Those in Haiti
Haiti is struggling to recover from the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that occured two weeks ago. It was the same size as the devastating 2010 earthquake, but because the epicenter was in the countryside, southwest of the populated capital city of Port au Prince, there were fewer casualties. Still, there were over 2000 deaths, over 12,000 injuries, and more many still missing.
Because of the ongoing political turmoil, there is no government aid. Yet there is a tremendous need for food, water, and shelter, worsened by the severe rainfall and flood from Tropical Storm Grace just two days later.
In addition to the need for food, water, and shelter, there is a huge danger from the spread of Covid, due to the close contact of many unvaccinated people in shelters. The psychological damage from watching children, other family members, and friends die in these tragedies will cause scars that will last forever.
There are many organizations that are collecting items for the victims in Haiti, but many of them provide little or nothing to the areas where it is needed. The most effective way to donate is through the church, which will direct the money to the synod and on to our companion synod and Pastor Livenson in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Haiti.
As always, in addition to donations, we continue to pray and remain in contact with our brothers and sisters in Haiti.
