Community e-News l 8.30.20
Wednesday morning, during Class Spotlight, the class of 2024 celebrated the Welcome to the Sisterhood liturgy.

“Though we may not be together in the Garaventa Center, we are still gathered today as a community of sisters. Let us take a moment to appreciate our virtual sacred space. Even as this may be the first time we see each other, we are starting our journey of growing together as a community. We may see familiar and unfamiliar faces, but we have one thing in common: we are all one in the Carondelet sisterhood. In this Sisterhood, our home is each other.”

Back to School Night
Virtual - Thursday, September 3

This year's virtual Back to School Night is scheduled for this coming Thursday. Please make sure you check your emails as your daughter's individual schedule with links to teacher videos will be sent directly to you Wednesday or Thursday (the invitations will go out in two waves to respect Google's daily email quotas).

If you have any follow up questions for teachers, please do not hesitate to send them an email. We have set a little time aside during our professional day on Friday, September 4 for them to start responding to questions.
An Update from Principal Cushing
The State Framework for K-12 schools reopening for in person instruction that was issued on July 17 is still in place. The framework prohibits in-person instruction at schools in a county on the State’s monitoring list due to a high rate of COVID-19 exposure. Once Contra Costa County is off that watchlist for 14 straight days, we will be able to move to our hybrid schedule as a next phase. We are not there yet; however, we did make a proposal to County Health about the possibility of creating cohorts for student activities and community building. We have just received further guidance that allows us to create these cohorts, following specific guidelines and protocols.
Cohorts cannot be used for instructional purposes (e.g., academic classes and labs), but can be used to provide targeted services and small group support for students while schools are otherwise closed for in-person instruction. Support can include groups focused on extracurricular activities and to support students with specific specialized learning plans in place. We are in the process of creating these cohorts to allow more students access to campus and the person-to-person community that is part of what makes our school special.

What is happening already: The Athletics Department has created workout and training cohorts at the CAC after school. Students come twice a week and can participate in up to two activities that cycle in three-week blocks. There are roughly 300+ students in these cohorts. If you are interested in having your student on an athletic cohort waitlist, please contact Cat Arroyo.

Soon to launch: The DLS/CHS Company will break into three cohorts: (acting, tech costume/makeup; and tech sets). These cohorts will run through the fall and the plan is for the play, 12 Angry Men, to be filmed for all of us to enjoy.

What next: We are making sure that face-to-face opportunities are available to the greatest number of students to offer Student Life and Specialized Support cohorts. The new cohort offerings are being planned now and will be announced when finalized.

Each student is allowed to choose one of the following options:
Two fully outdoors Athletics cohorts; or
One Student Life or Specialized Support cohort; or
One Student Life or Specialized Support cohort and one outdoors Athletics cohort.
A student cannot have two Student Life and/or Specialized Support cohorts because these will tend to depend more on inside interaction in the main campus spaces.

The limit on the number of activities is in place to reduce the potential spread of the COVID-19. If we do have a positive case, we can readily do contact tracing connected to the student’s specific cohort(s)—limiting the impact to a smaller number of students. The goal, of course, is to ensure proper distancing (students no closer than six feet for 15 minutes or longer) and with masks when not participating in athletic, socially distanced outdoors cohorts.
We will continue to communicate timely information on student cohort opportunities. We ask for continued patience as we work through the process.
Thank you,
Kevin Cushing
CHS Prescreen App for Accessing Campus
With athletics and Company cohorts underway, and additional enrichment cohorts on the horizon, we are introducing the CHS Prescreen App to increase accountability and safety on our main campus and at the CAC.

CHS Prescreen will be automatically pushed to all school-issued iPads on Monday, August 31. Additionally, students may download the app on an iPhone with iOS 13 or higher. We are currently in development with Android and hope to have the app available on Google Play within the next few weeks.

Prior to every on-campus visit starting on August 31, students must complete the CHS Prescreen questionnaire and be prepared to show their green CLEAR screen to their adult cohort leader or coach upon arrival. A red screen will prompt students to follow-up with a school staff member and/or a healthcare professional.

For additional information, please read through our Frequently Asked Questions:

How do I get started?
Open the app from your school-issued iPad or download the app from the Apple app store. It will only work with your school-designated email. Students, faculty, and staff must sign up when first using the app and you will receive a generic verification email sent by “no reply.” If you don’t receive an email right away check your spam and junk folders. Click on the verification link and you are ready to go. Once you are back at the app you can log in using your email and password. After you log in the first time you won’t have to log in again on that device, unless you sign out.

If you are using a school-issued iPad and you do not see the app, please go to the app portal and download it. You can view instructions here

Why do you need my first and last name as well as email?
We use our school email to keep access secure to only the Carondelet community. We use your first and last name so it appears on the CLEAR screen for easier processing when coming on campus.
When should I fill out the app?
Ideally, we want you to fill out the app before leaving for school or the CAC. If there are any issues you can address them prior to commuting to school either over the phone or through email with school staff.

Why do I need to do this each day?
The app will reset each day at a designated time, so the prescreening process needs to be completed each time you come on campus. The CLEAR screen will allow you access to our campuses and helps to keep you and those around you safe.
What if my screen is Red?
Don’t worry, it just means the school is going to ask a few more specific questions regarding your situation. Contact the school using the information on the red screen. Thanks for being honest with your assessment.
What if my device does not have the latest operating system version that is compatible with the app?
Don’t worry if you don’t have a device that works. Just contact Jessica Rollins for all athletics-related activities or Caitlin Main for all other activities and they will review the process for gaining entrance to the school.
The Parent Fund Supports Your Students
Thank you to the families who have contributed to the parent fund. So far, we have reached almost 10% participation, with a goal of 100% participation by September 30. We need your support now more than ever.

Why is your support critical during these challenging times?

  • Tuition revenue covers 90% of Carondelet’s operating costs. To provide the excellence in curriculum and programming that you and your daughter’s expect from a Carondelet experience, we rely on fundraising and other sources of funding.
  • In addition, the pandemic has caused financial hardship for some of our Carondelet families, and we have increased our financial aid pool significantly to help ease their burden. We also have numerous unbudgeted cost increases due to the pandemic.

Jeanne Hall Roder ‘90 & Shap Roder, CHS ’23 & DLS ‘22 Parents,
share why they support the Parent Fund:

“Despite the difficult times COVID has brought, we feel it is important to make a pledge to the Carondelet Parent Fund. We know that tuition does not cover all operating expenses. We want to invest in the extraordinary programs Carondelet offers our young women such as athletics, retreats, and staff development that make CHS the special place it is.”
Our Athletics Fan Wear Team Store is now open for all sports! With all the adjustments to schedules and sports being moved around we will be doing one single athletics team store for all sports. This is fan apparel and is open for all to purchase in order to support your favorite team or teams! All orders will be delivered to the Carondelet Athletics Complex (CAC) and a pickup day or days will be organized once the shipments arrive.
Deadline to order is Tuesday, September 8.

Junior Jumpstart Recap
Juniors got a crash course on how to make the most of their college search during Junior Jumpstart! College & Career hosted the virtual workshop with about 140 Juniors and their families last Thursday. Our college counselors offered lessons in looking past the perception of prestige, instead finding the qualities and characteristics that each college uniquely offers. Five very recent CHS grads from the class of 2020 offered very candid tips about the college search during junior year and how to go about it given the pandemic. It was one way our college and career staff share their expertise to offer advice and guidance on the road to college!

Freshman Families get their own class-specific virtual presentation during Freshman Road to College Night on Wednesday, September 9.
College & Career Updates

Friday's Morning Prayer
Friday marked the 57th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Let us pray for all of those who experience racial injustice and that we as a Carondelet community may continue to offer our full support.

Justice seeker ~ Through your goodness, open our eyes to see the dignity, beauty, and worth of every human being. Open our hearts and minds to understand that all your children are part of the same human family. Open our ears to hear the voices of our neighbors. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said in this “I Have A Dream” speech, “We cannot walk alone, and as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back.” Give us the strength to walk alongside our brothers and sisters.

St. Joseph... Pray for us. God is my light! In the name of the Creator, of the Redeemer, and of the Sustainer. Amen.

Take a moment, to watch the video. MLK's speech STILL rings true today57 years later especially as civil unrest continues in our country and people continue to march, day after day, for a racially just world.
More than high school. Her school.
