2022 - 2023 Visitor Guide Underway!
 
Calling all Orcas Island businesses & organizations! Make sure you are included in the upcoming Chamber Visitor Guide. The new version will include the valuable maps and business listings that our visitors come to rely on.

Ready to sign up? Here is the form to download with all the information you will need. The cost has been discounted this year for everyone. However, you must be a member of the Chamber to be included.

Support Prune Alley
Prune Alley construction continues. Vehicle access to & from Eastsound via North Beach Road & Prune Alley to be closed through the weekend. Intersection at School Rd/North Beach reopens Tuesday evening (8/5).

The ongoing road construction on Prune Alley has created hardships for all businesses in the area. Noted below are important access points to help you reach these businesses. Madrona Street to Rose Street will help with several businesses. Sidewalks on Prune Alley are accessible via Rose Street. Please call them to double-check hours.

Lower Tavern. Walkway access from Island Market parking lot.
MONTi. Park on/near Rose Street. Dedicated walking access to restaurant.
Eastsound Liquor. Park on/near Rose Street. Easy access.
Sequel. Park on/near Rose Street; sidewalk access to front of building.
Waterfront Gallery. Same as Sequel. Access via sidewalk from Rose Street.
Island Skillet. Walking access from North Beach via A Street.

FALL 2022 FERRY RESERVATIONS NOW AVAILABLE
Ferry riders can now reserve spaces on sailings between Sept. 25 and Dec. 31. Customers can view the sailing schedules for these dates online. Reservations can be booked online or by calling 206-464-6400. Please note that international service to and from Sidney, B.C. remains suspended.
EVENTS THIS WEEK
WHITHER THE WIND BLOWS - THE ORCAS GRANGE
The Actors Theater of Orcas Island will present the world premier of Whither the Wind Blows, for two weekends August 4 - 6 and 11 - 13, at the Orcas Grange. The play, written by Rick Gossett, from Skagit Valley, is directed by Tom Fiscus. The play will follow a special concert of Hebridean and Celtic music beginning at 7:30 pm performed by a group of local musicians, led by Dave Zoeller. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Darvill’s Bookstore, online at orcasactors.org or at the door.

JACQUELINE & JOHN ~ LIVE FOLK MUSIC @ THE BARNACLE
Thursday, August 4, 6 - 8 pm
Jaqueline and John categorize their music as “rooted in soulful lyrics and creative instrumentation, and continues to grow and change with the tides of our inspirations.” This summer, they head out on their DIY west coast tour to celebrate Jacqueline's debut solo EP release. Come see them perform on Orcas! In their words: we’re both frequently covered in dirt and fond of early mornings, pancakes, and songwriting over coffee. No cover.
CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL - Free Admission Event
On Friday, August 5 at 5:30 pm, Time for Three, with guests Sempre Sisters, will be playing their usual fun and exciting genre-crossing music on the Village Green in Eastsound. This free concert is dedicated to all who work so hard and contribute so much to life on Orcas Island – the servers, cooks, cleaners, bartenders, clerks, guides, gardeners, caregivers, teachers and so many more. Can you identify the plants and trees of Moran State Park? What about which flora you can eat? JEFF JOHNSON TO LEAD SELAH SERVICE, OI Community Church 
You are invited to join musician Jeff Johnson as he leads a contemplative worship service in the Orcas Island Community Church sanctuary on August 7 at 5 pm, service includes music, readings, and silent prayer. He will be joined by guest musicians Emy and Lisa Carter. Jeff Johnson’s music spans forty years of over fifty solo and collaborative releases featuring Progressive/Rock, Jazz/New Age, Contemporary Celtic, and Contemplative music. Most of his recordings – all self-produced and recorded – have been released on his own Ark Records/ArkMusic label, which he began in 1977. orcaschurch.org.

LIBRARY FAIR ON SATURDAY, AUG. 13
Check out the Summer Book Sale organized by the Friends of the Orcas Island Public Library. The Book Sale will be held on Saturday, August 13, from 10 am to 3 pm in the library’s parking lot, Eastsound. Orcas Kanikapila, local ukulele musicians and singers, will provide musical accompaniment to your book viewing pleasures starting at 11:30 am.

THE ARTS AND MUSEUMS
OI LIBRARY FEATURES TWO ARTISTS IN AUGUST
This month, the Orcas Island Library features work by two artists, Erin Earl Moonbrick and Zoe Osenbach. Earl’s triptych, “Background Radiation”, is an abstract work painted in acrylics. Zoe has been working in mixed media art, working with found/used/recycled objects to give them new life. Read more.

FLORA PHOTO EXHIBIT THROUGH AUGUST
Anita Leigh Holladay, local photographer, is exhibiting her favorite flowers, mostly in large format, for your enjoyment throughout the month of August at Banner Bank in Eastsound, weekdays from 9 to 5. The show will likely be up until the Labor Day weekend. anita.holladay@gmail.com

BISON ANTIQUUS OPENING AT HISTORICAL MUSEUM
Step into the ancient past at the Orcas Island Historical Museum’s brand new Bison Antiquus exhibit! Carbon dated to 14,000 years old, these bones are not only astoundingly complete, but show signs of human butchering suggesting the presence of pre-clovis humans in present day Western Washington. ISLAND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH (IRHI) IS HERE TO HELP
If you are unable to provide health insurance to your employees, IRHI continues to offer strictly confidential, reproductive-health patient care to both women and men. What do we provide? Initial office visits to evaluate the most effective options for birth control, STI lab testing, pregnancy tests, as well as paying for birth control. ISLAND HEARING HEALTHCARE @ ORCAS SENIOR CENTER
Stacie Nordrum, Au.D., CCC-A, of Island Hearing Healthcare will be offering hearing appointments at Orcas Senior Center on Thursday, August 25, September 29, and starting October 6, every first Thursday of the month. Services available include hearing tests, consultations, hearing aid programming, and other hearing aid services. Consultation, cleaning, and checks of hearing aids will be offered free of charge. SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY HEALTHCARE - SENIOR CENTER
Speech-Language Pathologist, Libby Lewis, will offer free cognition and swallow screenings at Orcas Senior Center (OSC) on Thursday, August 11 between 12:30 and 3 pm. Screenings involve a review of concerns, a brief one-page assessment of cognition or observation of consumption of one food and one liquid item. A discussion of next steps to consider will follow.

Safe Kids Northwest is hosting a free car seat clinic on Thursday, August 11 from 3 - 5 pm. Learn how to properly install and use your car or booster seat. Position: Front Desk Associate (Guest Services & General Store)
Details: The Front Desk Associate is the primary person interacting with guests. They are responsible for preserving Doe Bay’s unique culture by providing excellent guest service as it pertains to reservations, communications, and store operations. The position addresses guest needs, provides information, maintains unit inventory, reservations, and room assignments, processes guest folios, manages cash, and supports General Store operations.
Pay is up to $19 per hour depending on experience. 30-40 hours per week. Health Benefits available after 2-3 months. Onsite housing is not available at this time.
