From the Desk of Mrs. Tiezzi
Dear St. Rita Parents/Guardians,
I hope this first newsletter of the 2021-2022 school year finds you and your child/ren well and enjoying a much needed summer vacation. The past six weeks have flown by rather quickly as our summer camp and summer academic program were in session. Students were excited to be with their friends and teachers and learn some new and exciting things. In July, we installed a new phone system, replaced some classroom flooring and painted a few classrooms, as well as began our summer cleaning and preparing the school for the new year. During August we will concentrate on getting ready for the new school year and updating the COVID protocols we had in place last year.
As we have done for the past few years, Monday, August 30 will be our soft opening day. Parents are asked to drive your child to school that day during your designated time slot (see below), to locate your child’s classrooms, meet his/her teacher and bring in his/her supplies. The first full day of school will be Tuesday, August 31. Bus transportation, before care, after care, and hot lunch will be available for students beginning on Tuesday, August 31.
Classroom assignments will be available to our families on Friday, August 27 after 5:00 P.M. in order for students to know where to report on soft opening day. Please look for the email with your family information on that day to access your log-in information on our school portal. Also, at that time update your family emergency contact information on the portal.
Many of the COVID protocols we had in place last year such as arrival & dismissal procedures, disinfecting and sanitizing procedures, hand washing, staying home when sick, and the aftercare pick-up worked well and will remain in place. Other protocols, such as eating in the classrooms, changing classes for the middle school students, desk shields, sports and activities, Home-School events, and technology usage need to be reexamined and possibly adjusted to better meet the needs of our community. At this juncture, the decision on wearing a mask within the school building has not been fully determined and will be dependent on if the State of Connecticut/Governor mandate masks for all students and teachers. Currently, masks do not need to be worn outdoors. Should the decision to wear a mask be left up to the individual school districts to make, the Archdiocese of Hartford school district will make the decision for the Catholic schools. Please be assured that the health and safety of our St. Rita students and faculty continues to be my highest priority. An updated COVID Response plan will be sent out to you the week of August 23.
I am pleased to report that 100% of the faculty and staff at St. Rita School are fully vaccinated. I would strongly advocate that each student who is eligible be vaccinated against COVID before school starts. If you choose to vaccinate your child, please provide the nurse with a copy of your child’s vaccination record. I fully understand and respect that the decision to vaccinate your child and yourself is a personal one. Please understand that we will be requiring any adult who volunteers for school events such as sports, clubs, room parents, HSA events etc., to be fully vaccinated and we will be asking for proof of vaccination to ensure the health and safety of our school community.
The remote learning initiative is no longer an option for the upcoming school year. At this time, we will be requiring all students to be in school daily to receive in-person instruction We will do our best to accommodate any child who will be absent from school due to a COVID quarantine. If your child is truly sick for whatever reason, please allow him/her to have a sick day and do not request that he/she transition on-line. There is an added level of preparation needed by the teachers when students switch to remote learning to ensure the same caliber of instruction for all. To expect teachers to do so because your child is out for a day or two is an injustice to them. It also creates added stress on you and your child to ensure he/she has the necessary tools and supplies to make his/her learning successful.
If you know of anyone who is qualified and interested in teaching middle school earth and life science on a part-time basis please have them give me a call. I am still in the process of interviewing for this position.
Thank you for entrusting your child/children to our care. Please share with your friends and neighbors all the great things that are happening at St. Rita School. Best wishes for a safe and relaxing end of summer. We look forward to partnering with you and your child for the upcoming school year.
