Minority-owned Houston businesses and nonprofits will soon have a chance at tens of millions of dollars in grants through a city-run program aimed at social justice initiatives.
The Houston Fund for Social Justice and Economic Equity will begin taking applications beginning August 9, hoping to provide grants of $10,000 to $65,000 to hundreds of businesses.
Created in 2021, in part as a response to the May 2020 murder of Houston native George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer and the global protests that followed, the fund was bolstered by a $20 million donation last year from Wells Fargo. That money will become available to applicants and can be used to buy assets, such as equipment and property.
To apply, the business or nonprofit must be in the Houston-area, have 50 or fewer employees, be led by people of color and have been established by December 31, 2021. Click here to submit applications from August 9 to August 23.

In 2022, Art League Houston is kicking off a multi-year initiative to re-imagine the role of an Art League School to foster radical imagination, reduce economic barriers to art education and impact positive social change through the arts. 2022-23 will be a pilot year as new-and-revitalized programming is slowly rolled out throughout the year. This program marks the start of a larger initiative to prioritize arts access and equity taking place at the ALH school.

Lemond Kitchen provides full-service catering, alcohol beverage service and event production.
Chef Reggie Martin discovered his passion for food at a young age while working for Lemond Catering, his family’s business in Houston. In 2003, Reggie and his wife, Merinda Watkins-Martin, took over the family business.
Combining Reggie’s passion for great food and Merinda’s dedication to quality service, Lemond Catering soon earned a reputation for making every event — from intimate affairs to major corporate galas — an incredible experience.
Together, the couple launched the Lemond Kitchen brand in 2013, which allowed them to create a line of retail products and expand the company through new food concessions and catering contracts.
