Wave Three news

Wave Three Training

Registration for Wave Three training is underway, with 42% of providers across Northern, Western and Eastern Zones registered. Breakdown by zone:

• Northern Zone: 52%
• Western Zone: 31%
• Eastern Zone: 34%

Physicians are asked to review the Provider Learning Mapping Guide to identify required training ahead of registration, then use the Go-Live 3 Registration Guide for step-by-step instructions. Both resources, along with opportunity to sign up for training, are available on the Training Registration Portal.

Our goal is 100% registration by August 10. Training begins August 17.

Please note: All physicians, nurse practitioners, residents, physician assistants and associate physicians who provide care in Nova Scotia Health facilities are required to complete training. This includes all acute and post-acute care units, emergency and urgent care, long-term care units, medical day units, surgical assistance and in-hospital clinics (excluding primary care and chronic disease clinics). Physicians who write a note or enter an order on a patient with an active Nova Scotia Health encounter will need training. Completing the required training is mandatory to receive access to the clinical information system. Access will only be granted after training has been completed. There are no exceptions.

Wave Two Reminders & Resources

Reminder: Actions on Test Patients Trigger Workflows

We continue to see orders placed and documents signed on test patients in the CIS. Although these are test patients, these orders create actions for the laboratory, diagnostic imaging and pharmacy. Similarly, signed documents are routed to the providers identified in the test patient's record.

To avoid unnecessary disruptions, please do not use the CIS (the live production environment) for testing or practice. This includes placing test or practice orders and creating test or practice documents.

Reminder: Fax Future Outpatient EMG Referrals for Halifax Infirmary

Future outpatient EMG referrals for the Halifax Infirmary must continue to be submitted by fax. These referrals should not be entered as future orders in the OPOR-CIS.

While EMG orders are active in the system, they are currently associated with inpatient testing only. When EMG requests are entered as a future order, they do not flow through in the CIS to enable appropriate triage and processing, and submitted requests may not be visible to the team for scheduling and completion.

Please continue to follow the interim process for all future outpatient EMG referrals:


• Fax the referral directly to the EMG department at 902-473-6351.
• Notify the EMG department that the referral has been submitted by calling 902-473-4169.
• Confirm that the referral has been successfully received by the department.

This interim workflow will remain in place until the Ambulatory e-Referral build is complete.

If additional support is required, your Division or Department Head can help determine next steps and escalate issues, as needed. Learn more here.

CAPE: Collaborative Approach to Palliative Encounters

CAPE is a quality improvement initiative that brings a palliative care approach into everyday primary health care.

The Palliative Care Network is inviting teams to learn more about CARE and advance this work by participating in a quality improvement initiative. See how you can contribute to enhancing care for people living with a life-limiting illness by completing this Expression of Interest form.

Accreditation Learning Series: IPAC RSPs

Join the Accreditation Readiness Team for the launch of the Accreditation Learning Series. This series is designed to support every Nova Scotia Health team to feel ready and confident in preparing for the Accreditation Canada on-site visit in November and December 2027. 

With a new topic each month, the series will offer practical guidance and stories from teams at Nova Scotia Health on how accreditation standards help us provide quality and safe care every day. Questions are welcomed and encouraged! 

In collaboration with Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC), this inaugural session will focus on the IPAC Required Safety Practices (RSPs):

• Cleaning and Low-Level Disinfection of Medical Equipment
• Improving Hand Hygiene Practices
• Health Care-Associated Infection Surveillance

Reminder: OpEx Survey

Nova Scotia Health wants to hear about your experiences with OpEx at Nova Scotia Health. Complete the survey that best matches your role:

• Staff Survey: for clinicians, staff and team members who experience OpEx in their day-to-day work.
• Leader Survey: for leaders, managers, clinicial and operational champions and others invovled in planning, supporting or overseeing OpEx implementation.

⏱ Survey lengths: 10–15 minutes

🎤 Optional follow-up interview: 30–45 minutes

Your feedback will help us understand what is working well and identify opportunities to improve how OpEx supports teams across Nova Scotia Health. Survey closes August 31.
