A Note from Sherri:

“Thus says the Lord: Stand at the crossroads and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.”

Jeremiah 6:16 NRSVUE

We’ve been talking about the importance of knowing where we’re heading as a congregation. If we don’t know where we’re going, how will we know when we’ve arrived? We’ve explored the definition of a local church, found in ¶201 of The Book of Discipline. Let’s look at ¶202 The Function of a Local Church.

¶ 202.  The Function of the Local Church — The church of Jesus Christ exists in and for the world. It is primarily at the level of the charge consisting of one or more local churches that the church encounters the world. The local church is a strategic base from which Christians move out to the structures of society. The function of the local church, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, is to help people to accept and confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and to live their daily lives in light of their relationship with God. Therefore, the local church is to minister to persons in the community where the church is located, to provide appropriate training and nurture to all, to cooperate in ministry with other local churches, to defend God’s creation and live as an ecologically responsible community, and to participate in the worldwide mission of the church, as minimal expectations of an authentic church.

Let’s list this out:

1.       Help people accept and confess Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

2.     Help people live their daily lives in light of their relationship with God.

3.     Minister to persons in the community where the church is located.

4.     Provide appropriate training and nurture to all.

5.     Cooperate in ministry with other local churches.

6.     Defend God’s creation and live as an ecologically responsible community.

7.     Participate in the worldwide mission of the church.

These are the minimal expectations of an authentic church.

How is your church doing with these expectations? I encourage you to spend some time with other church leaders and discuss these 7 areas. What assistance do you need to move your community of faith toward living into these expectations? Let me know what you discover.

Prayerfully yours,

Sherri
