Principal's Message
Greetings Hornets,
On behalf of Hinsdale South's Faculty and Staff, I offer this advance welcome as you prepare to return to school on August 21st. We are excitedly anticipating seeing the hallways, classrooms, and other spaces filled with new and returning students. We hope you and your students will take advantage of the many opportunities we have to be involved in the life of Hinsdale South High School.
Parents and guardians will not regret volunteering to serve with South's Booster Club, Athletic Boosters, Music Boosters, the Community Liaison, The Hinsdale South Foundation, or other opportunities. These organizations need your support, and whichever you choose is right! Students will also positively reflect on their time as athletes, club members, class officers, and many avenues to contribute or be active. Equally important is the fact that these activities help students build the resume and skills needed to succeed after high school. So, I encourage students and families to get involved!
Hinsdale South is a special place with a fantastic dedicated faculty and staff. We are privileged to have students committed to their goals and parents who work hard to support them. Ours is a school dedicated to excellence for all learners, and our diversity is a strength. So, we have what it takes to have a very successful school year.
Welcome back, everyone, and our entire team is looking forward to seeing you very soon.
Dr. Patrick Hardy, Principal

Freshman and New Student Chromebook & Student ID Card Pick-up
Grade 9 students can pick up their District 86 Chromebook and Student ID card for the 2023-2024 school year.
The Class of 2027 Chromebook and ID pick-up will take place on Tuesday, August 15, and Wednesday, August 16, from 7:30 am-3:00 pm inside the Library at Hinsdale South; no appointment is necessary.
Please park in the stadium lot (across Clarendon Hills Road) and enter through the Main/Circle Drive entrance.
The library is on the first floor upon entering the building. While in the library, students can retrieve their Chromebook, Student ID card, and PE uniform.
Students will take their ID card picture on site.
Students must have their Chromebooks before their first day of attendance on August 21, 2023, since the device is a critical part of instruction for the 2023-2024 school year.
Only District 86 families that have completed the online registration process and turned in the necessary medical forms to the health office will be able to pick up Chromebooks.

We are excited to welcome students back to school on August 21.
On this day, Freshmen will start their day at 8 am. They will attend each class for 15 minutes, where they will find their classes, meet their teachers, and navigate the building independently before the rest of our student body arrives in the afternoon.
Students will also participate in a South Pride celebration, the Activity, and Athletics Fair and eat lunch at school. As in a typical school day, cafeteria food will be available (or students can bring lunch from home). In the afternoon, first-year and upper-level students will participate in rotated sessions.
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors will begin their school day at noon. All students will rotate through sessions, including a welcome from the principal, a guest speaker, a Student Center informational presentation, and a school-spirit welcome-back celebration.

Attendance
We are updating our process for taking attendance in classrooms this school year. Each time a student enters a classroom, they will scan their ID to be marked present for attendance in Infinite Campus. This shifts the responsibility for student attendance onto the student.
Students must come to school with their ID and scan each hour of the day. If a student does not scan into a class, parents will be informed via a notification through Infinite Campus.
This shift will help us ensure that students always have IDs, make attendance data immediately available to parents, and provide more instructional time for our teaching staff.
Hallway Passes
During the 23-24 school year, select academic departments have been chosen to participate in the pilot of a new hall pass system at Hinsdale South.
We are looking to implement a more robust system that helps us better track student mobility patterns and allows us to manage pass availability for students.
To do this, we will use the Five Star app, which has been successfully utilized in managing district events and activities.
This app will be automatically installed on student Chromebooks. At the beginning of the year, deans and teachers will provide students with instructions on downloading and using the app on their phones to access hallway passes.
Hornet Academy
As we embark upon a new school year, Hinsdale South looks forward to providing students with another layer of academic support through a new Hornet Academy program.
This program is designed to provide selected regularly attending, struggling students structured support during the school day to achieve the necessary subject-area skills to reach their full academic potential. As part of this program, which runs in 3-week cycles, selected students will attend their assigned Hornet Academy intervention session during their 50-minute lunch period (eating lunch will occur in the classroom). They will be working with a subject-area teacher.
Parents of students selected for this support program will be notified via email. We appreciate your continued partnership in supporting your student's success at Hinsdale South.
