and Membership News
Saturday August 1, 2020

Hello Maryland AMTA Members,

And here we are, it's August and for most of us dealing with the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on our lives and profession continues to be front and center. A number of useful resources were included in the email from AMTA National yesterday. More on that in a moment.

First, the Maryland AMTA Chapter Board wants to welcome all of our new members - we are proud to announce that we have increased our chapter membership by 67 people over the last few months. Thank you for joining us, we appreciate your trust and interest and are glad to have you as a part of the AMTA-Maryland family!

Back to the COVID news.
With little new to report, we understand that the fatigue of it all is setting in, and hope it will be helpful to go over the small changes statewide and let everyone know that nothing has changed in Montgomery County - massage has not yet opened - more below.

Governor Hogan released a new Executive Order on Wednesday,
These are the details that are pertinent, does not include Montgomery County.

Massage Businesses may be open on an appointment basis only
  • May NOT exceed 50% of the establishment's maximum occupancy
  • After providing services to each customer must clean and disinfect the area in which services were performed in accordance with applicable guidance from the CDC and MDH
  • Fitness Centers are also allowed to open at 50% of maximum occupancy
  • Maximum occupancy is set by fire code and all businesses will have been notified when they got their appropriate permits for operation
  • Beyond this, all therapists and practitioners as well as the massage businesses must be screening for COVID and taking appropriate safety precautions, such as PPE, per the Secretary of Health's guidelines. Whether health care providers or not, we are all bound by Health Department rules.
  • Details can be found on the Maryland Board of Massage Therapy Examiner's web page.

Face Covering Requirements (includes Montgomery County)

Face Covers that fully cover the mouth and nose and are secured to the head must be worn:
  • Indoors at any location where members of the public are generally permitted, including personal services which includes massage.
  • Outdoors when unable to consistently maintain at least six feet of distance from individuals who are not members of their household.
  • When obtaining healthcare services,
  • Anywhere interaction with others is likely, including shared office/work spaces.
  • The Face Covering requirements also apply in Montgomery County

We are sure there will be more questions - please feel to reply or visit us on Facebook for more of a discussion - our main page is https://www.facebook.com/amtamd

Montgomery County
Montgomery County made it clear this week that they are not moving quickly to change anything in their reopening plan. They have had the same mask/face covering rules that the state adopted this week and are being cautious overall. Here is County Executive Marc Erlich's latest message.

What this means for Massage:
In Montgomery County LMTs are permitted to work within Health Care Settings only. Back in May, the Maryland Secretary of Health allowed that a Health Care Setting includes any massage business that only has health care providers working, so many businesses have been able to reopen with LMTs only. We understand the frustration for RMPs.

All of the other information about opening as a Health Care Setting has been covered in many previous newsletters and can be found on our webpage.

Montgomery County does have a grant program “Reopen Montgomery” and small businesses are able to apply for grants. More information about the program is available at montgomerycountymd.gov/biz-resources/reopen/

Beyond that, we will keep you posted when we hear more from the county leadership.
