College of Education Alumni Awarded Teacher of the Year Honors
LaTeira Haynes, a graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills' single subject credential program, has been named a Los Angeles Unified School District 2015-16 "Rookie of the Year" teacher for her skill in preparing effective instruction and procedures, and providing a positive classroom learning environment for her students. Pitch and Pale Alumni Night
CSUDH Alumni enjoyed a summer evening listening to legendary percussionist Pete Escovedo and the Latin Jazz Orchestra at Pitch & Pale at the Stub Hub Center. Alumni enjoyed dining from award-winning food trucks, and tasting local craft beers - all while showing their Toro pride!

Class Notes
Susanna Chavez (CRT, 11)
received the "Teacher of the Year" award from the Lynwood Unified School District where she is a third grade bilingual education teacher.   

Mario Congreve (MA, 88)
was honored with his first Emmy Award in the Best Documentary category for his work as co-producer and director of photography for the film "Cuba: the Forgotten Revolution." The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Lower Great Lakes Chapter presented Congreve and Glenn Gebhard, the film's director, the regional Emmy award during its 47th Annual ceremony in Sandusky, Ohio.  "Cuba: The Forgotten Revolution" tells the virtually unknown story of Cuban revolutionaries Frank Pais and José Antonio Echeverría-a school teacher and architecture student, respectively, whose names seldom appear alongside their more famous contemporaries, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. Congreve is also a media production specialist at CSU Dominguez Hills and lecturer in the Digital Media Arts program.   

Jeanette Griffin-Kimber (BS, 77)
has been honored at the White House as part of the School Support Champions of Change program, which works to make a difference in the lives of students every day. She was selected by the White House for her leadership and tireless work to help students in our nation's schools receive the support and motivation they need to succeed. Griffin-Kimber is a substitute teacher coordinator for Meadowcreek High School in Norcross, Georgia and is currently a doctoral candidate for an Education Administration and Leadership degree. She is also a member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter. Griffin-Kimber founded the non-profit organization called "NIA." NIA was a social, cultural, and educational mentoring program that served 475 girls from the inner city streets of Chicago.
 
Cheryl Harless (BS, 06)
has been selected to be the new chief nursing officer at Doctors Medical Center. Previously, she was chief nursing executive at Sutter Health's Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, CA. She began her career in 1997 as a nurse and later served as director of Patient Care Services until 2011.     

Paul Kraft (MA, 11)
has been selected as the new principal of Hope View Elementary School by the Ocean View School District. Immediately prior to his new position, Kraft served as principal of South Orange County's Capistrano Unified School District. He also served for over 20 years as an elementary teacher and as a teacher on Special Assignment and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) coach. 

Vivian J. Malauulu (MA, 00)
was elected to the Long Beach Community College District Board of Trustees on April 12th during the Long Beach general municipal election. She won by a landslide with 60 percent of the votes. Malauulu is the first Latina elected to the college board, and the first candidate to defeat an incumbent. 


LaRonda J. McCoy (BS, 82)
has been appointed judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court by Gov. Edmund "Jerry" Brown Jr. McCoy has been head deputy at the Los Angeles County Alternate Public Defender's Office since 2015, where she has served in several positions since 1996. She served as a deputy public defender at the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office from 1990 to 1996.

Christina L. Rios (MS, 95)
has been named director of outreach and school relations at CSU Dominguez Hills. Christina has been an integral member of the Student Affairs team since she joined CSUDH in 2014 as the associate director of Outreach and School Relations. Her time at CSUDH has provided Outreach and School Relations with expanded vision, focus, and greater levels of consistency. Prior to CSUDH, Rios worked in Admissions and Relations for more than 25 years.  

Linda D. Rose, Ed.D. (BA, 91) (MA 93)
has been appointed president of Santa Ana College by the Rancho Santiago Community College District's (RSCCD) Board of Trustees. Rose is a veteran educator with over 23 years of leadership experience in higher education with a demonstrated passion for helping and engaging with community college students in their pursuit of academic achievement. Prior to this appointment, Rose served as president of Los Angeles Southwest College (LASC). From 2011-2014, she was vice president of academic affairs at Santa Ana College, serving as the college's chief instructional officer. Prior to that, Rose held several positions at Cerritos College.


A.C. Woolnough (BA, 72)
has been elected vice chair of the Parkinson's Disease Foundation's (PDF) People with Parkinson's Advisory Council. In this role, he will help drive PDF's goals of ending the disease and supporting those affected by it. Woolnough was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2014 and the cause is especially close to his heart as his late father also lived with the disease. Soon after his diagnosis, he joined PDF's Parkinson's Advocates in Research program. In this role, he encourages other people with Parkinson's disease to get involved in research, often sharing his own experience of participating in six clinical trials. He also serves as the Idaho assistant state director with the Parkinson's Action Network. Woolnough is a retired high school principal and English teacher with more than 35 years of experience in California, Idaho and Alaska.
