LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Cheri Jolivette
Dear members: after 1 1/2 year absence of live meetings for CFG we are going to meet together again on Sept. 8. I have been in the sanctuary of Grant Park Baptist Church and it is spacious, with individual chairs. You may move your chair to give yourself space… we will be SAFE! All will wear masks. We will also attempt to zoom the meeting, for those of you who cannot come…. Please come and enjoy our fellowship.

At our meeting, we will elect a slate of Officers. We have all positions filled, except for President-Elect.
Please consider stepping up for this position. You may be nominated from the floor, or call me at 503-524-5419 and I will put you on the slate. Your first year is easy! As President you will receive lots of help from rest of the board. Remember, you can delegate work… we need continuity to keep our Guild working. I have spoken to many of you , about 50 of you, and you declined. Someone MUST step up, or our Guild will weaken and die in a year.. that means no more Creative Wearables, no more High Fiber Diet, no more Surface Design…….

Also we are adding some items to our 52 year old bylaws to be more inclusive. Read them and prepare to vote on them at the meeting.

See you again at Grant Park Baptist Church!

Our Bylaws have probably not been added to since they were originally written. Amended yes, The committee used the Modern Quilt Guild Bylaws for reference in an attempt to update our bylaws to better reflect guild needs in 2021 and beyond. Attached is a copy of the Guild By-laws with proposed changes from the Board. Changes include the following:

Article IV Membership Section 3
Amending the Membership levels to include a Student Membership Level. The proposal is a 50% discount, however, that will be addressed next fiscal year when the Standing Rules are reviewed.
Article VI. Officers and Elections.
Section 4
  • Amending to remove the 2 year limitation for members of the board. The change is made for the following reasons:
  1. Board members are voted on each year, hence an opportunity to initiate change
  2. More financial transparency is available than when the Bylaws were originally written
  3. The addition of the removal procedure provides direction if there are issues with a board member (see section 6)
Section 6
  • Addition of additional language regarding vacancies on the board occurring through resignations or removal. It is felt that it is the responsibility of the board to remove an board member that is not performing the duties to the guild.
Article VIII. Meetings.
Section 1
  • Removed the month meetings are held and replaced with quarterly
Section 2
  • Removed month of the Annual meeting and replaced with language referencing the final meeting of the year
Article IX. Finance. This entire section is new
Section 1 Budgeting
Section 2 Financial reporting and transparency
Section 3 Definition of income types and parameters for working with excess funds
Section 4 Conflict of Interest (Attached as a separate document)
Article X. Maintenance of Guild Records. This entire section is new
Section 1 Permanent records and documents included
Section 2 Limitation of time physical financial records are maintained
Section 3 Indefinite retentions of statistics and data and guild busienss
Article X. Photography Policy. This entire section is new, directing the new board to develop a Photography Policy.

How do you store those left over bindings and ribbons?
I prefer to keep them as flat as possible and found by winding them on empty toilet paper rolls they stay flat. I pin the end through the roll to keep them from unwinding.
The rolls can be stored in a drawer, on a shelf, on a rack, or pinned to your design wall for auditioning them for next use!
News From Your Program Chairperson
Karen Miller
As I am sure you all understand arranging this years and next years programs has been and still is something of a moving target. I do have speakers and workshops set for this coming year but details change almost daily. As it stands now we will have a Zoom presentation in December from David Owens Hastings. I have invited garment designer Diane Ericson to join us from Ashland in March, to do freeform draping and detailing on wearable art. June was to have been two three-day classes with Kerr Grabowski on her signature improvisational screenprinting. She called today and asked to work with me to develop two sessions of a live Zoom presentation instead. Having learned a lot this year about what can be done this way we agreed this will be safer and in some ways easier. September will be one (or two) classes with the fabulous stitcher Susan Brandeis, author of the wonderful book Threads. I am relieved that we still have such great opportunities ahead. We have a genuine committee beginning to plan for the following year.

Life Takes Us on Many Journeys

There is nothing like the excitement of a red dot on a gallery tag. It means SOLD! Artist Kimberly Connelly engaged in an interesting conversation with a viewer at Latimer during our open house reception and the visitor ended up purchasing the artwork. How exciting is that?????

You too can engage with this piece, and others in the Journeys exhibit, at Latimer Quilt and Textile Center in Tillamook until September 5th. Plan a day at the Oregon Coast and spend an hour looking at art! The Center is open MWFS 10-5 and Sunday 10-4. Double check Covid days/times at 503.842.8622.
